"I don't remember..."

“...Face down?”

“Apparently.”

The professor bends over and lightly shakes the sleeping otter. In under a second, the Oshawott shoots up into a standing position and turns to stare at the two humans suddenly in front of her.

(Who is that?) The Oshawott thought to herself.

(I recognize the Professor, but not this weirdo.)

The Oshawott growls at the hand put in front of her. She immediately decided she didn’t like this new human, and therefore-

-bit them.

“Gaah! Ffffffrick!” The new human cried in pain.

“No! Bad girl! Stop!” The Professor howled, knocking the Oshawott on the head.

“Nono! It’s fine! I’m fine!” The new human lowered their arm so that the Oshawott’s feet touched the ground again.

“It’s okay.” They cooed. “I overstepped. That was my bad. I’m so sorry, honey.”

Slowly, the Oshawott released the person’s arm from their jaws. She looked at them with suspicion. No yelling? No insulting her? No hitting her? She just bit this human square on the arm- and they were apologising?

The human slowly retracted their arm. They smiled at the Oshawott with kind, patient eyes, and kept a respectable distance from the Oshawott.

“I’m going to be your new trainer.” They said calmly. “I wanted you specifically. You’re strong, and confident, and you don’t tolerate things or people you don’t like.”

The Oshawott straightened up and stared at the human, intrigued.

“Basically, you remind me of me. Nobody else will give you a chance. But, I want to give you a chance. Nobody gave me one, but, maybe... I can give you one.”

She blinked. This human spoke gently, and with kind words. They talked to her like they were actually putting in an effort to communicate with her, and it made her feel...

...Calm.
