He sensed her presence before Icy emerged from the shadows. A certain coldness always preceded her. Subtle, but clearly noticeable.
"I wanted to apologize for being so... cold," she said with a fake smile. "I would have knocked, but you know..."
Just like on Andros, the cavernous system that served as Valtor's hideout in Magix had no doors or other luxuries. Valtor secured his chambers with spells. Spells that didn't stop Icy. Simply because they werenāt supposed to. He had hoped she would come back to him sooner or later.
"We were both a bit standoffish," Valtor admitted, trying to sound sincere. His gaze was fixed on the water stars that he was levitating before him. "This situation isn't easy for either of us. You've lost your sisters, I've lost valuable allies."
"Allies," Icy repeated slowly, savoring each syllable. "Are they really?"
Valtor turned his gaze away from the water stars and studied her. Icy. Cold perfection. Blue eyes, long silver hair, a porcelain complexion, a slim but feminine figure, and... two undone buttons on her blouse that allowed a deep glimpse of her cleavage without revealing too much, but enough to play into a manās fantasies.
Valtor felt something stirring within him. Icy knew him better than she thought. Her sapphire gaze lingered on him as she continued. "There can only be one reason why you want Darcy and Stormy back."
He raised an eyebrow.
Icy continued. "There's more."
Valtor studied her warily.
She had to play this carefully, play it smartly. Play it in a way that wouldn't make Valtor suspicious. He shouldn't think she was eavesdropping, which she was.
Icy strolled across the room with a deliberately casual air, trying not to let her nervousness show. Valtor, however, only noticed her provocative hip swing.
"So?" Valtor asked.
"They must be more valuable than mere subordinates, otherwise you wouldn't be trying so desperately to bring them back."
Valtor's eyes narrowed. What did Icy really know? If she had even the slightest clue, his entire plan would be in jeopardy. But there was no emotion in her white face, nothing that could have helped him read her. So he said dangerously calmly, "Go on."
"You said you knew our mother." Icy blurted out the word. "She'd been sick my whole life, barely able to retain any magic. The doctors said it was an illness since birth, but I never believed that. You would never have been interested in her if she'd been some weak witch."
Valtor nodded. "That's correct." He hadn't expected this change of direction. He was curious why Icy had brought Malicia into the picture. With an interested look, he encouraged her to continue.
Icy had a bad feeling when she saw Valtor's attentive expression. She swallowed, turned away from his cold, gray eyes. She felt his gaze on the back of her neck, and a shiver ran down her spine. If only that damned son of a bitch weren't so damn attractive.
To hide her nervousness, she tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and continued matter-of-factly. "She was never married, and she stubbornly kept it a secret from us..." she paused, uncomfortable speaking her thoughts, considering what she and Valtor had already done.
"What did she keep from you?"
She looked him straight in the eyes, bracing herself for an unpleasant truth. "Valtor, are you our father? Is that why Darcy and Stormy are so important to you? Because they're... also... your children?"
