āJust a little longer, dear. You just need to hold on for a little longer.ā
Valbar paused to adjust the position of your legs and let you tighten the grip of your arms around his neck, in an attempt to make your seating a bit more comfortable. It had been hard enough trekking through the vast lands of Zofiaās forests with little rest, but throw in your huge, swollen belly and your sore feet, and it felt near impossible.
Your husband could see this, and so insisted on carrying you on his back until you reached the next town-and even that was severely uncomfortable for you.
āJust think about that nice, warm bed Iāll be putting you in once we get there-weāll get some hot food, too.ā
Though he was doing his best to be comforting, it still couldnāt stop you from releasing a pained whine as his armour plates chafed suddenly against the sensitive skin of your arms. That, and you could feel your child kicking from inside you-it seemed as though nothing would give you relief from your pain.
āIf only we had a wagon, or a ponyā¦Iām terribly sorry, my friend. But, Iām sure weāll arrive soon, and get all the rest we need.ā
Celica bore an upset expression as she apologized-and thankfully for you, Valbar would answer with the words you didnāt have the strength to say at the moment.
āNo worries, milady. Thatās none of your fault-weāre troopers anyways, arenāt we love?ā
The priestessesā eyes glanced over your exhausted form, as if to wonder if you were really okay to continue, before returning to focus in front of her.
āHey, look! Weāre nearly there-woohoo!ā
Mae, who walked at the front of the party, was the first to notice the village slowly coming into view-and of course, she grabbed a non-consenting Boey by the sleeve and ran forth, in an eager dash to rest her aching feet. Your husband bellowed with a laugh as he happily informed you that you were almost there, and picked up the pace to match the excitement.
While the rest of the fighters practically cheered at the prospect of a rest and a drink, you found yourself enough at ease to doze off right on Valbarās shoulder, letting your worries melt away. He, on the other hand, allowed himself an unusual depressed expression, unable to keep up the faƧade of mirth he kept on just for you.
He knew what was inevitably going to happen, what he had to do in the next day. He was going to be forced to make another hard decision-he had to leave you in the care of the villagers, while he and the others ran off to fight the Rigelians. Heād already made the decision, so far as when you first realized you were carrying his child, and he knew it would break your heart to watch him leave without you.
But if there was anything he was sure of, it was that he would not lose you, nor his unborn child. He would go and help to bring down the corrupt Rigelian Empire, and then he would come back to embrace you and help you raise your baby together.
He would try, if only for you.
