Valant stepped onto the cool grass, dewdrops shining in the moonlight. Edelweiss was twirling around in a grove of tulips. Valant watched her with a small smile growing at the edge of her lips. She looks beautiful in the moonlight.

Giggling, Edelweiss stopped spinning and stumbled towards her friend.

“Woah!” Not able to keep her balance, she flopped onto the ground, rolling over to see the stars.

Valant quietly walked over to where she was and sat next to her, leaning up to see the sky. Her eyes grew wide. It was the most stunning thing she had ever seen.

The sky was painted with swirls of color, blues and blacks and purples and grays staining it. Sparkling stars were sprinkled in. Valant slowly breathed out as she took it all in.

“Amazing isn’t it”

The voice snapped her out of her thoughts. She turned to see Edelweiss smiling at her. A sight I’ll never get tired of... She nodded and looked back at the sky. Edelweiss rolled over to be closer to Valant and stayed close, lying on her stomach.

“I sneak out all the time just to spend one more night under the stars. The servants won’t let me come out here often.”

Valant gave her a questioning stare.

“I’m in training to be the next queen, and as heir to the throne they don’t see it as “proper” for me to be out playing in the garden. It’s my father’s orders. Ever since my mother died from sickness he’s been keeping a close eye on me.”

Valant sat up, looking at Edelweiss. Edelweiss smiled brightly at her, teeth as white as the moon itself, and Valant found herself looking away with burning cheeks.

“Come on!” Edelweiss exclaimed, jumping up and helping Valant to her feet. “There’s so many places in the garden I can show you!”

“And then the princess found a beautiful little shop and she stayed there and was happy forever!” Edelweiss exclaimed as she fell back on her bed giggling.

Valant was watching her with an amused smile as she held a fluffy pillow to her chest. Edelweiss looked at her with a big smile.

“How was that one?”

Valant’s smile grew and she gave an encouraging nod to her friend. It wasn’t often that she said said anything but Edelweiss didn’t mind. Talkative or not, Valant was still the best friend she had ever had. Rolling over on her bed, she looked out the window and saw the full moon shining into the big bedroom. She lightly took Valant’s hand and led her over to the window, climbing up onto the window ledge to sit on her knees and look out. Edelweiss scooted over as Valant silently climbed up and looked out the window, pressing her hands against the glass. Edelweiss smiled as her friend’s eyes grew wide. Outside was a light show of fireflies dancing around the garden, their lights flickering in the light of the shining moon and stars.

“It’s beautiful isn’t it.”

Valant just stared at the shining sky in wonder and amazement, casting her gaze farther down to see the town and its floating lights.

“You’re safe here. I’ll make sure no one ever hurts you again.”

Valant looked at Edelweiss in surprise, her eyes still wide. Edelweiss just smiled, her chubby pink cheeks shining.

“...Pinky promise..?”

Now it was Edelweiss’ turn to be surprised. Valant had spoken! Her smile grew as she held out her pinky.

“Pinky promise!” She grinned, hugging her friend tightly. “Now shall we go take a closer look at the sky?” She pulled back, looking at Valant as she nodded excitedly.

Taking her hand gently, the two girls silently snuck out of the bedroom and down out to the garden.

Damn, that’s a theory I never considered before, but I’m intrigued!
