@pikapeppa tagged me, so I guess I'll bite! A small snippet of my WIP for Chlodine Week. Takes place loosely during/around the events of my fic from last year, Where The Time Goes.

“Are you sure?” Nadine asks, referring to Chloe not going with her, for the millionth time that day.

They’ve talked about this. So often, in fact, that Nadine reminds Chloe of a child pleading for attention. But there is nothing childish or selfish about it. It’s Nadine’s way of telling Chloe she is wanted. That Nadine feels safe enough to have Chloe at her side, despite the unknown chaos that may result. Even though the chances of Chloe changing her mind are unlikely, it is not exactly zero, thus Nadine asks.

They both know Chloe’s presence would only bring turmoil. And force them to answer questions neither are ready for. To Nadine’s family, Chloe is responsible for the current trajectory of Nadine’s life. She’s the one that made Nadine abandon her family’s legacy, and lose a huge chunk of their fortune, to boot. They are still more than a little bit miffed about that.

“I want to. So much,” Chloe says, resting her free hand on Nadine’s leg in the passenger seat. She squeezes it in comfort. “Maybe someday, when they are not absolutely fucking bollocks about us being together. Right now, I think they may eat me alive.”

Nadine laughs, but it’s a forced thing. Chloe is right, of course. They both know Chloe’s presence would be an absolute disaster, and Chloe doesn’t want to put her partner through that. Especially not at such a vulnerable, fragile time in her life. So, she and Nadine resign themselves to the current situation, no matter how difficult it may be, or how little they want it.

The closer they get to the airport, and the closer Nadine comes to being whisked away, the tighter the twisting feeling in Chloe’s stomach turns. When their turnoff finally appears on the horizon, Chloe’s insides feel like they completely fall out of her. The emptiness is pre-emptively filled with anxiety, before Nadine even has the chance to leave. Something inside her says she’ll have to get used to this feeling, if she ever hopes to survive the next 2 weeks on her own.

Alone.
