TREAT

Asahi leans against the doorway and watches Ushijima hand out candy to the most recent group of trick or treaters on their porch. It’s an adorable sight, the way he crouches down to be at their level, the way they react with glee when he compliments their costumes so sincerely and gives them each two pieces of candy. One of the kids asks him a question that Asahi can’t quite make out, and he nods seriously before answering.

The ears of his own costume flap whenever he moves his head, and Asahi thinks that even with all the kids, Ushijima is clearly the cutest person he’s laid eyes on all night. He makes a perfect dog, with his dark eyes and soulful stare, the way he only wants to please, how gentle he is even with his abundance of size and strength. A little girl reaches out cautiously, and he stays as still as he can while she pets at his ears.

She runs off afterward with a loud giggle, the other kids following behind her, and Asahi tries to hide the sappy grin on his face before Ushijima turns around. By the look he gets he’s not very successful, but Ushijima’s eyes are warm and loving as they love at him, a teasing quip on his lips, so Asahi can’t find it in himself to mind much. He tugs Ushijima just inside the door, out of sight, and presses a sweet kiss to his lips, only pulling away when there’s a clatter on the porch.

Who said “I love you” first: Asahi. He was very blushy about it and it was adorable. 

Who would have the other’s picture as their phone background: I’m gonna say Ushi on this one. 

Who leaves notes written in fog on the bathroom mirror: Asahi. Cute little messages like “good luck today!”

Who buys the other cheesy gifts: Ushi maybe? I feel like Asahi tends towards handmade gifts. 

Who initiated the first kiss: Hmmm. Maybe Ushi? Or maybe it was a team effort lol. Either way, SO MUCH BLUSHING. These dorks. 

Who kisses the other awake in the morning: Either one, depending on who’s awake first. Usually that’s Ushi, but Asahi high key loves kissing Ushi awake on the rare occasion he is up first. 

Who starts tickle fights: Idk if either of them would, for fear of retaliation.

Who asks who if they can join the other in the shower: Ushijima.

Who surprises the other in the middle of the day at work with lunch: Asahi.

Who was nervous and shy on the first date: Both of them. High key.

Who kills/takes out the spiders: Asahi. He never kills them though, he just captures them under a glass and takes them outside. 

Who loudly proclaims their love when they’re drunk: Ushi.

Iwadai:

Who said “I love you” first: Daichi.

Who would have the other’s picture as their phone background: Iwa. It’s a cute photo of sleepy Daichi. Daichi has no idea. 

Who leaves notes written in fog on the bathroom mirror: Daichi? idk. 

Who buys the other cheesy gifts: Iwaizumi. 

Who initiated the first kiss: Hmmmm. Maybe Iwa?

Who kisses the other awake in the morning: Daichi. Iwaizumi tends to just let Daichi sleep when he wakes up before him (it’s totally not because Daichi is adorable when he’s asleep nope no sir).

Who starts tickle fights: Daichi. He’s a shit, don’t be fooled by his responsible exterior.

Who asks who if they can join the other in the shower: Both?

Who was nervous and shy on the first date: Hmm. Daichi? Idk. I feel like they’re probably friends for a good while before they start dating so at that point they’re fairly comfortable with each other.

Who kills/takes out the spiders: They both do. It’s just a spider.

Oisuga:

Who would have the other’s picture as their phone background: Both of them.

Who leaves notes written in fog on the bathroom mirror: Oikawa. Lots of smiley faces, too. 

Who buys the other cheesy gifts: Oikawa. Suga just buys Oikawa sweets. 

Who initiated the first kiss: Suga. Because Oikawa’s a shit and waited for it so Suga would have to go on his tiptoes. 

Who kisses the other awake in the morning: Suga. Oikawa’s a night owl so he’s slow to wake up in the morning.

Who starts tickle fights: Oikawa. He always regrets it, though. Suga fights dirty. 

Who asks who if they can join the other in the shower: Oikawa.

Who surprises the other in the middle of the day at work with lunch: Suga.

Who kills/takes out the spiders: They both do. They usually keep it under a glass to look at it for a while first though.

i genuinely believe that asahi and ushijima would balance each other out and complement each other in a really interesting way while also having a fun parallel and thematic question around what it means to be The Ace at the core of their relationship. i mean my main thing in the simplest terms is that i think asahi really benefits from being around straightforward people, and ushijima really benefits from being around people who are willing to take the step to realize that his bluntness isnt malicious, its just. bluntness.

to explain a little more, though: asahi is the kind of person who hyper analyzes and overthinks everything; on one hand, it feeds into his anxiety and makes him second guess everything, but on the other, it makes him really good at trying to figure out what exactly the people around him are thinking, and it means that when he isn’t anxious out of his mind, he really takes the time to think about what he wants to say and do.

ushijima, conversely, doesnt consider very heavily what other people might be thinking, or how his words might be misconstrued, because why would they be when he says exactly what he means? frankly, that’s kind of on other people for reading into subtext he really isnt adding, but it also results in him not initially understanding a lot of what other people do and say, because he expects them to be exactly like himself—straightforward and no-nonsense. but when he's around people who either are like him or at least understand his nature, he's able to really connect.

the interesting thing comes in that, well, i dont think they would necessarily get along at first. asahi would be doing exactly what he shouldnt—reading too far into ushijima’s words, and assuming they’re somehow malicious—and ushijima wouldn’t understand or like asahi’s flightiness and anxious rambling. but i think given some time and interaction, they would actually benefit a lot from being around each other. once asahi could realize ushijima only ever says what he means, and really isn’t rude, he just holds strong beliefs and defends them with full confidence, he’d probably really appreciate knowing for certain that he doesn’t have any reason to overthink it. and once asahi gets comfortable, i think ushijima in turn would appreciate that asahi takes the care to really think about what he wants to say, as well as being observant enough of him and other people to be able to kind of act as a second perspective in a way that isnt hostile or condescending. even if ushijima doesn’t necessarily agree with everything, i think that he would find asahi interesting rather than inscrutable. they'd be able to take each other seriously, not belittling or dismissing each other's quirks, but because they aren't, like, the same, they also wouldn't take it all too seriously; they'd just be able to kind of spot each others weaknesses while acknowledging their strengths, if that makes sense. maybe not even weaknesses and strengths, just. differences. points of view. that kind of thing, you know? just… being able to pick each others brains about their differences, without that confrontational aspect.

and when it comes to volleyball…

i mean, their takes on each other wrt to volleyball would largely depend on when they started interacting, but. i think in general, ushijima kind of represents what asahi thinks he should be as the ace, and asahi represents a strength in the midst of chaos that ushijima really respects. you could say its as simple as the core conflict between karasuno and shiratorizawa as a whole—simple, pure power vs innovation and evolution—but i think it goes deeper than that, too. while ushijima cares about pure power for powers sake, it isn’t necessarily just, like, a pride thing. it kind of is, but it also has to do with a core belief that a team is as strong as its ace, and a desire on his part to be the last resort, the paragon of strength, the pillar his team can rely on no matter what. and that driving force, that need to be strong for the sake of the team, is what asahi tries so hard but feels he fails at. But on the other hand, asahi doesn’t actually fail at it—he just doesn’t have the confidence to see that. but to make up for it, he’s able to adapt with the rest of the team and keep growing and growing so he doesn’t get left behind. I think ushijima would be able to see asahi’s simple, pure strength and help him see it for himself, and I think asahi would be able to show ushijima a different kind of strength without being so directly confrontational about it as, say, oikawa or hinata.

honestly i guess i just really really really like the idea of ushijima seeing asahi as, like, the only member of karasuno who's normal, and then having that idea turned on its head and needing to reevaluate what it means to be Strong. and asahi seeing ushijima as everything he ever wanted to be, and then actually interacting with him and seeing the human behind that and coming to understand him as just, like, some guy who really, really, really likes volleyball instead of some untouchable monster on the court, and that making him reevaluate how he thinks.

also. final and arguably most important point for my case:

Asahi was hungry. It was an interesting feeling, somehow similar and entirely different to how he’d felt hunger as a human, but no less demanding. Maybe it was even moreso, how the feeling took over his brain and body, how if he let it go for too long it would take over and sate itself without his help or knowledge. At first it had scared him to let that happen, and he’d taken every measure to avoid it, but now he’s not as worried about it, figures that if it happens, it happens.

He is much better at finding sustenance these days, though, and finding a meal that will last is much more important than the immediate sating of his hunger. He’d gotten lucky when Tanaka had stumbled on him with his last snack in the woods that night, and he couldn’t resist taking advantage, not when he’d been dropped into his lap like a gift. It was Tanaka’s mistake to follow him, anyway, when Asahi hadn’t wanted to be seen.

Kuroo was a little better, late the next night, walking right into Asahi’s path after Tanaka. He still wasn’t quite right, though, and Asahi knew it even as he indulged. It would hold him off for a few days, but Asahi had to find something more suited to his appetite.

Of course, the thrill of finding just the right person was an amazing feeling all on its own, and Asahi is more than pleased when it happens only a couple of days after feeding from Kuroo. He watches his new prey carefully, following him day after day. He finds out his name is Ushijima, and when he gets a papercut at a coffee shop, Asahi realizes he’s absolutely perfect.
