Mehtab Ahmed: Tour dé America
It was really hard to say good bye to Amherst and UMass. It was too sad to see tears in Emily's eyes before departure; it melted my heart. Touqeer, Faizan, Abigial and Leah and all others had given us a lot of respect and time that's why we all felt very sorry leaving them behind. Well we reached at Boston: the educational capital of US. We were lucky to visit world renowned Harvard and MIT Universities. We also had the chance to meet the one of the youngest congressman of Massachusetts, Goldstein Rose and talked kn different social issues. Then in Department of Mental health initiatives of Massachusetts for mental health were discussed briefly, their efforts were really praiseworthy. Lastly the Blue Man Show was too funny and creative and we all enjoyed it.
Then we came to the city that we dreamed to visit, none other, the New Yark City. Brooklyn Bridge, Central Park, Roosevelt Island, UN Headquarters, One World Trade Center, Times Square, Statue of Liberty and many other places we visited in just four days yet we couldn't explore all the city. Play "Come From Away" was nothing but a marvelous piece of live art. None of the actors was famous but they didn't do anything less than any famous actor. Well we moved to Charlottesville happily on the Sunday. Memories we have made, will always remain in our minds.

I am lost!
The person who came to the States was completely different than the one who will go back to Pakistan. I am now more secular and committed than ever to my dreams. In the last five weeks much has changed and I am proud of everything which I did. I used to be a baby boy but now I have been transformed into a man. I have learned that every thing is not exactly the same as it looks like and you need to see through the deeper side. During the four weeks at Amherst, I found myself in many different situations and have learned from each of them. The conversations with everyone in the group and with people whom I met during that time have left an ever lasting impact on my personality. The purpose of this program has been well served because it has changed me altogether and now I am afraid of none. So far, I have made the most of the study tour. In Boston, I was excited to see my dream university Massachusetts Institute of Technology. I went to Harvard University where I saw many historical sites. These two institutions are so prestigious to me that I bowed my head with respect when I entered. The visit to Massachusetts State House was amazing and discussion with Representative Solomon made me realize that legislation in the States is one of the hardest things to do. The session on mental health opened up my mind about different mental heath problems and how they could be solved. I was really excited to see New York City because it never sleeps and you can explore it at any time whether it be in day light or in darkness of night. The visit to One World Observatory was the best as from top of the building you can see the whole city. I experienced my first cruise tour to the Statue of Liberty. New York City has influenced me in almost every way and I embraced it with a warm heart. I know that my last week will be historical as I will see Charlottesville and Washington DC. I also know that it will hurt to leave all the friends which I made here during my stay in the States but I know it’s life. And this is the way life works. I am more satisfied now with everything I have. In the end, I want to thank the State Department and The Civic Initiative. Especially I feel this is the right time to thank all the mentors with whom I have shared memories which played a vital role in making me a better person. I am thankful to Jesse Tucker, Brooke Lochiatto, Sean Jackson, Maria Arenas, Lisa Servaes and also to the Academic Directors Samantha Camera and Tom Fricke. I am impressed by Director of The Civic Initiative Mike Hannahan and I want to thank him for all the conversations which I had with him as they made me think outside of my comfort zone and played its role in making me the person I have now become . I have completely lost myself here. But the good thing is that I am happy to be lost. I do not want to be the person I used to be before. I am happy that I am lost!
Mehtab Ahmed: 4th Week
Fourth week was our last week in Amherst. We had academic sessions on entrepreneurship, grant writing and leadership. We also had session with chairman of Donahue Institute, he gave comprehensive overview of all the services they are offering and the change they are making.
Thursday was a hilarious and enjoyable day; yes, it was our compaign day. Our teams were running election compaigns for Warren and Trump. Compaign was full of energy and enthusiasm. At last Trump made it to White House for 2020. Apart from fun, compaign also gave us an overview of US political system. Later in the week our last session was on Historical overview of LGBTQ Rights. In the evening we went to Jewish Community of Amherst. Session gave a great chance to remove our biases about Jewish people and we also found the way to present a positive image of Pakistanis towards them. Dance on the music with religious poems in the synagogue was amazing and soothing. We all had a wonderful time with Jewish community.
On Saturday, we started wrapping up our things and had conclusive class about program and study tour. In the night we enjoyed Pakistani food with lots of dance on desi songs. It all ended in tears in the morning of Sunday saying goodbye to Amherst and its lovely people.
Week 3 & 4: Nazish Haider
Week three was tragic, so was week 4th I went through a rollercoaster of emotions and sentiments. Six flags was an experience of its own. I tried to make the most of it, usually I’m afraid of height but I pushed myself to overcome it by trying rides like free fall and sky screamer.
It was fascinating.
By the end of third week, I had this feeling of having UMASS SICKNESS when I’d be back home.
Best part of my 4th week was my stay over host family and shabaat celebration at the Jewish community Amherst. I’ve never seen such hospitable hosts ever in my life, usually Pakistanis are considered as more hospitable nation. But I want to tell the world that there exists more of them around the world you just need to be lucky enough to have them :’)
I didn’t want to leave their company. Th sath was amazing from visiting peace pagoda to making raspberry ice cream so delicious to the breakfast and to watching fireflies in the farms at night. I was amazed by the kind and humble gestures shown by my host family. I have recieve a lot of gifts from them out of them all their love stands out. I will always remember you Jeff, Yael, Adam and Racquel 💕

Week 3: Muhammad Hamza Khan
So my third week was stable in UMASS. I have gotten used to the area and the locals. There is so much to do in one day that by the end of these three weeks it feels like I have been living here for a life time. My life back in Pakistan feels like a distant memory now. I have no answer for this but it truly feels like I have been living here for atleast a year now. From time to time I become reminiscent of home but then singularity that is America sucks me back into itself and before realizing again I feel further and further distant from my life in Pakistan. America truly is a colossal marvel of wonders and sights that keeps you wanting for more.
Mehtab Ahmed: Third Week
Third week started with talk on US Compaigns. Later on we were divided in teams of Trump and Warren to run mock election compaigns of 2020. That afternoon we also visited Puffers pond, swimming there was quite enjoyable. On Tuesday morning we visited the Amherst Regional High School and met with school principal and superintendent. Other sessions of the week include Public Policy Evaluation, Comparison of Pak-US Public Policy conducted by Obaid Pasha, and American media by Shaheen Pasha.
On Thursday, we visited Treehouse Foundation a non-profit that provides shelter and food to orphans and unattended children. They had arranged a dinner for all the group and it was all fun. People there were very loving and caring. We all spent a quality time there. On Saturday, I had homestay in the home of Dennis and Anne. They were a lovely couple enjoying life in countryside of Amherst. Sunday went full of fun at Six Flags. I tried some terrible rides through and slides. It all ended happily.
ATIF ALI- Week III (If I could live these moments once more...)
My head is working as a roller coaster moving across the trail without knowing where to stop and i am still undecided what to write about from this week because all the activities were kind of unique in their own sense and i am impressed by almost everything. How a person would feel who always dreamed of a school where education will not be judged only on the sheer basis of how good a student memorizes things but also how good he practices what he learnt? I was stunned when i visited Amherst High School because of many things. When Tom told me that his grade in class is based on somewhat forty different things, I was compelled to praise the school system of Amherst. The most fascinating thing was that schools are being governed by local council which is elected by people of town. This is quite a unique thing because any common man can complain about something to the member of school council whom they earlier elected. In this way, the gap between educationist and masses reduce to a great extent and common people can impact the environment of schools. I was stunned to see the practice of extra curricular activities in school because in my country most of the school don’t have such facilities, at least i had never been able to see such school there. The visit to Tree House in Easthampton was different because America does not really has a family system where children, parents and grandparents would live under the same roof. But at Tree House they do live in the same house although those people are not related by blood but they are related by emotions which holds a upper hand in relations. The love which those people share is tremendous and these kind of communities are example for others to follow. The home visit to a Pakistani American family was really amazing. The people were so caring that I felt at home and we shared our views about many things. I had a lot to learn from them and I did learn.  And if your week ends with a visit to Six Flags, what else a person can ask for? I have challenged and fought myself during the roller coaster rides because I have never been to such rides in Pakistan. Most of the rides were quite dangerous and I have learned that if you keep telling yourself that you have got it, then indeed you have got it. It was a wonderful week and the moments which have been imprinted in my mind will remain there for good.  Â
