cecile and remi enemies to lovers arc when
Episode 223. This is the start of a new chapter for UnOrdinary and it’s so goddamn refreshing. Watching Vaughn and Doc and everyone interfere for the first time in forever, while being a lot to unpack, is so grounding and reminds me of how these are still kids. I think that’s why it’s so comforting, this recent episode. I feel like we can breathe again and everything’s going to be okay for everyone, you know? Hope isn’t really as common in UnOrdinary anymore, but as John leaves Wellston, we’re rooting for him again, and that feels so damn good.
I do, however, worry about what’s been left behind, and about really holding John accountable for the things he’s done. As welcome as hope is, I can’t help but to think it doesn’t belong. Just a few weeks ago, John was everyone’s worst nightmare and I even said how his story is so heartbreaking because we can’t root for him anymore. Yeah, John’s on a new road to betterment, again, but what about the pain, violence, and hate he brought to everyone at Wellston? The countless students in the hospital, the absolute state he left the hierarchy in? John shouldn’t deserve another chance at redemption and shouldn’t deserve new hope, and yet we excuse it maybe because we realize how young he is, or we realize how much he wants it this time?
This has all happened before, almost exactly. I swear John was even wearing the same clothes that he wore when he had to leave New Bostin. The parallels are back. John creates an absolute shithole out of his life and creates victims out of the people and environments around him, but we keep giving him another chance to move on and to try again. When does it end? Will it?
The biggest difference between what happened at Wellston and what happened at New Bostin is John’s friendship with Sera. Perhaps one of the most currently obvious signs of his growth is that he sought her out to make it alright, or, at the very least, better, before he left. John never had that with Claire, never got to address face to face what he did to her and their old life. And there was a much stronger emphasis on healing this time around, for John especially. I can’t see him going back to Keon voluntarily. Will this make a difference going forward? I fucking hope so, because otherwise, this looks like we’re reentering that loop again and putting more people at risk so that we can maybe watch John redeem himself. It’s dizzying, but I’m not immune to hope. I’m excited to see where he goes, where the story goes moving forward. Because this time we have Seraphina, and a new drive to heal, and maybe that’s why we give John a new chance and that’s why we give him hope, because we want so bad to see John redeem himself. Maybe we want to hope.
All we have, at the end of the day, is hope. We can’t expect John to do better or to become a better person, because of his past, and we’re not expected to forgive him. But we’re expected to hope. And we eat that shit up.
