I was told that in the army of this Queen there is a regiment of women, who fight with her like men: that she made war upon a certain king, who was her enemy; and that, when her army was near being put to the rout, she made so furious an onset upon the king with her regiment, that she overcame him, put him to death, and routed his whole force. She then took possession of all he had, and brought the slaughtered king’s head to her father, who accordingly gave her the government of these parts. The neighbouring princes have made her offers of marriage, which she has refused to accept, except on one condition only, namely, that such person shall overcome her in the tournament. Of this, however, they have always been afraid, dreading the reproach of being vanquished by her .

Urduja has dreams, just as everyone else does. But where their dreams include marriage and money, hers revolve about adventure. Some day, she promises herself, she will not only welcome visitors to her father’s court, will not only lead her soldiers in drills, but will see wondrous sights with her own eyes. She will go as far as the pepper country unbidden, and she will bring back marvels with her.
But for now--she is needed here, by father and friends and subjects alike.
She does not mind. Every day, every minute brings her closer; and one day, she knows, she will not have to wait any longer at all.

Urduja was a legendary warrior princess mentioned in the travel records of the Muslim explorer Ibn Battuta. She is said to have been the daughter of a ruler named Tawalisi who ruled a land with the same name. She ruled the kingdom of Kaylukari in her own right and was also the leader of a group of warrior women called the Kinalakihan.
According to Ibn Battuta’s accounts, the land of Tawalisi, which was located around 17 days away from China, possessed many ships and was a rival to China. Urduja generously gave Ibn Battuta gifts that included robes, rice, two buffaloes, and four large jars of ginger, pepper, lemons, and mangoes, all salted, to prepare Ibn Battuta for his voyage to China. The actual location of Tawalisi is still subject to speculation, with some scholars claiming it to be any part of the island of Luzon, Sulu, Sulawesi, Java, Cambodia, or Cochin-China. Nevertheless, the province of Pangasinan still hails Urduja as one of the great pre-colonial heroes.
Urduja is usually described as a tall and beautiful woman with bronze skin and dark hair and eyes. She is adept in sword fighting and horseback riding and was quoted to have said that she will marry no one but the man who defeats her in a duel.

In the travel accounts of ʾAbū ʿAbd al-Lāh Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Lāh l-Lawātī ṭ-Ṭanǧī ibn Baṭūṭah, Urduja was a legendary warrior princess (Kinalakihan) of Kaylukari in the land of Tawalisi. Ibn Baṭūṭah reported that she had granted rule over much of the kingdom by proving herself to be a mighty warrior. He described Urduja as a tall and beautiful woman, with long black hair and golden skin, who swore to only marry a man who could defeat her in a duel. Before departing Tawalisi to continue his journey to China, Urduja gave ibn Baṭūṭah numerous gifts, including two buffaloes, rice, robes and four large jars of ginger, lemons, mangoes, and pepper. The location of Tawalisi is unknown, though it has been suggested as Cambodia; Guangdong, China; Sulawesi, Indonesia; Luzon, Pangasinan or Sulu in the Philippines; or Cochinchina, Vietnam. Despite the uncertainity, Urduja is a national icon in the Philippines and the namesake of the official residence of the Governor of Pangasinan.
