Some of my favourite read-aloud picture books are more song than story. They're less about the narrative than about the rhythm, the language, the sound effects, and the images, all combining to make a read-aloud experience that makes you want to move and dance along, or lose yourself in the sensory experience of it all. "City Street Beat" (2014) by Nancy Viau, illustrated in brilliant colours and vivid detail by Barbara Bakos, is one of those books. Following two little girls and their tag-along parents through a day in the city, the toe-tapping rhythms and rhymes see them from jumping rope to subway rides, from dancing to street musicians to flapping with pigeons.
