Urasue (裏陶うらすえ, "Lining Ceramic/Divination") was an evil demon ogresorceress who ultimately resurrected Kikyō.

Yeah. You read that right. And yes, I am aware what the narrative wants to tell me, but the story shows the opposite, so I’m writing this post to explain how and why.

It’s because of Time Travel. Kagome wont be born (soul reincarnated) for 500 years, which means that the soul in the past should still be available for Urasue to use for Kikyo. Basically, every time Kagome goes to the past, there should be two of the same soul there.

But Urasue tells us that Kikyo’s soul is already reincarnated in the past.

This means that there is another person in the Sengoku period reincarnated with Kikyo’s soul. Which, if it is the same soul as in Kagome (since souls are not individuals, it is possible that Kagome’s soul is totally unrelated to Kikyo’s), then Kagome is, at the bare minimum, the reincarnation of that person.

If the cycle of reincarnation is evenly paced (around 50 years, in this case) that means that the closest Kagome can be reincarnated from Kikyo is as the reincarnation of the reincarnation of the reincarnation of the reincarnation of the reincarnation of the reincarnation of the reincarnation of the reincarnation of the reincarnation of the reincarnation of Kikyo.
