A Circle's Circumvention
Back in An Imperfect Circle, one of the earlier entries I wrote when I was getting into the Tumblr game, I lamented the lack of vampire themed magical girls, or rather, how the most recent edition of the concept ended up falling short of my expectations (and also was very weird, when I actually looked at the premise.) If I wanted vampire-themed magical girls in visual novels (and maybe other mediums, but I find myself becoming more and more of a VN person. They're complete works of fiction from the get-go, that's a huge advantage over serialized work), all I had to do was look back a little further. One of the examples has been before my eyes for a long time.
The first is Unison Shift's Chu x Chu Idol series. While not totally a magical girl, she's really more of a musician, Chua Churam does involve one transforming from one person to another, and is also a vampire. And the series is about as lighthearted as one can get. Unison Shift may get dirty, but their works always maintain a playful tone.
The other is Stellula Eques Codex (and only Codex). Hiori, the red-eyed girl in the front, is a vampire magical girl, but, like Chura, with more emphasis on the "magical girl" aspect. Once again, the biggest difference here is the tone. I could write a whole article about how finding magical girl/superheroine visual novels that fit my criteria is a tough battle, but that's only tangentially related to the main topic here.
While neither Churam nor Hiori have the pseudo-gothic aspect of Vampire Crusaders that I liked, they also don't have rape as a primary method of conveying their erotic content, and that makes a huge difference. I'm willing to let one side of the circle fall out of it it means a more important part becomes rounded out. But my imperfect circle does exist in a fuller, closer to perfection form somewhere out there.
One example is hardly enough to be conclusive anyway.
Ota-Ma! Impressions (Part Koyori)
I've never seen that many tokusatsu-themed innuendos in my life. And I'm part of a perverted, sad fandom. Koyori turned Rider 1 being turned into a cyborg by Shocker into sexual roleplay. She said that getting ready to do it was a "Charge Up" and a "Sailing Jump". She quoted Enter and prepared to extract Hiroaki's "Enetron". (I will never look at Go-Busters the same way again.)
Still, she is a sub-heroine, so her role was never to be that major. Her story ended almost immediately after it began. But even the scene of Hiroaki and Koyori's wedding packed on the references. They had wedding rings that resembled Ultraman Ace's rings, and references were dropped to Magiranger and Ninja Captor (how many kids she wants) and also Sun Vulcan and even Ryukendo (how many kids Hiroaki wants.) Couple this with an earlier reference to Rescue Fire, and I can say that I haven't felt this satisfied with toku references since Nyarko.
The other routes will probably be okay, too, but I already cleared the best one.

Akibaranger is getting several important pieces of new merchandise to the point that it feels official, and this is a game I want to play within this month. I'm feeling in a very Akiba mood.
(This is still relevant, too. One of the sub-heroines, Koyori Oosu, is specifically a tokusatsu otaku.)
