hey! can I ask you a bird-related question? my friend's cats injured a bird outside his house, so he's taking the bird in and trying to help it recover. the cats tore feathers off of one of the bird's wings. he wants to know if its wing will heal/the feathers will grow back/it'll be able to fly again? it's a baby mockingbird if that makes a difference
it depends -- if just the feathers are damaged, the feathers will probably grow back. if the tissue itself, like the actual wing, is damaged ... I don’t know. It probably depends on the extent of the injury.
In general, baby birds are REALLY hard to take care of, and being in human dwellings is really really stressful for wild birds -- especially, again, with babies, where there’s a lot that can be screwed up. If it’s at all possible, I’d really recommend your friend try to return it to the nest (if it’s a nestling), which is the best possible option, or take the bird to a licensed wildlife rehabilitator.
