"I've got a gown here for you, and a blanket for baby," April says, kneeling down on the floor next to Sarah. "Are you okay to get changed by yourself, or do you want me to help?"

Sarah hesitates for a moment, then carefully hands her daughter to April in exchange for the gown. "I'm okay."

Connor's outside the cubicle, ready to jump in whenever he's needed, and while April waits for Sarah, she talks to him, standing in such a way that he can't see past her to Sarah.

When she's done, she gets up and leans against the wall of the cubicle, then holds her arms out to take her baby back. April passes her over, and all the while, Sarah can feel Connor's eyes on the both of them.

"What? What's going on?"

She doesn't miss the look that passes between Connor and April.

"Baby just looks a little small, that's all," Connor tells her. "We'll get the two of you checked out in a minute, okay? Make sure everything's alright."

"Can I take you out?"

April froze, her coat halfway on and shoes still untied, and she wondered if she'd heard Sarah correctly.

"Just- just for coffee. Or more if you'd like. It's just that you've done so much for me, and for Olivia, and I want to do something for you now."

Sarah had never looked so panicked, not even after giving birth alone in the ED bathrooms, and April simply smiled at her and finished pulling on her coat.

“now that I know you exist, how do I not love you?”

As much as Sarah wished she could go be in the NICU with her daughter, she was still too wiped out from the blood loss and shock of suddenly having a baby to do anything but sleep.

For a couple of hours, April sat by her bedside, but it soon became obvious that that wasn't what Sarah wanted or needed.

i have to give background information bc i have a compulsive need to overexplain everything

anyway i was watching mama doctor jones on youtube explain why nat's birth scene was so incorrect (it's So bad), and then i got on to watching her reviewing episodes of i didn't know i was pregnant

and it's basically. that

it's set during s1 when sarah was a fourth year med student and she just. suddenly had a baby that she had no idea existed

april spends a lot of time helping sarah out with things, bc everything's super overwhelming and she's hardly coping

over this time, sarah and april get really close (we all saw how they flirted in season one lmao) and they start unofficially dating!!

april loves sarah a lot, and she loves lolly as if she's her own daughter

and sarah is just. so whipped for april

Sarah breathes through another spasm of pain - she definitely pulled something in her back while she was asleep - and when she opens her eyes, Maggie’s right there next to her, brows furrowed in concern.

“Everything okay, Reese?”

She nods and forces a smile, failing to mention that the tylenol she’s been popping like candy all day has hardly put a dent in the pain, or that she somehow feels worse than she did that morning.

Sarah’s running purely on instinct and adrenaline now, too exhausted from the hours of pain to think for herself.

She’s in the staff bathroom, slumped against the wall of the cubicle at the end, curls sticking to her face with sweat and her scrubs at her ankles in preparation for what she knows is about to happen.
