yeah i know it’s been a year since i said i was doing this series and a year since i ordered all the things. tbh this may end up being a two-post “series” bc y’all, undersummers are where it’s at. i rate them a solid A grade and repeat purchases.
they call themselves “slipshorts” and are emphatic that they are Not Shapewear, which they truly aren’t. (they also call themselves “shortlettes,” presumably bc they could trademark that word.) wearing a slip has largely passed out of fashion, but the description is very accurate -- they’re made out of that same slippery, stretchyish poly-blend, just in a shorts-shape instead of a skirt- or dress-shape. there is no seam on the inner thigh, so even less risk of irritation in sensitive areas. the gusset is cotton-lined, so you don’t have to wear separate undies if you don’t wanna (i tried this for the first time yesterday and i was nervous at first but quickly forgot about it, plus no panty lines under the pencil skirt! win). there’s no compression, which is great bc who tf wants to spend ten minutes squeezing themselves into uncomfortable, non-breatheable shapewear in the summer when it’s hot and so humid you may as well have not bothered drying off after your shower and you’re going to be late to work if you have to spend that long putting on your foundation garments, amirite? and they’re plus size-inclusive, ranging from small to 5x.
there are a few different styles: classic, which has an elastic waistband and a simple stitched hem; lace, which has stretch lace at both the waistband and hem (the waist lace panel is cloth-backed and v. wide); and fusion, which has the plain elastic waist and lace hems. there are also four different inseam lengths: 6.5″, 7″, 9″, and 15″. the shortlettes come in both Sensible and Fun color and print options. they also offer athletic underwear (wide waistband, no lace), swim shorts, maternity shortlettes, leggings, and extra-long camisoles.
OF THE ONES I’VE TRIED, my personal preference is for the 9″ inseam in either the lace or fusion style. i like the look of the lace waist panel, but it’s a little bulky -- the simple waistband of the fusion style is good for sleeker outfits. i found that the simple hem on the classic style cut into my (extremely thunderous) thighs too much, so i definitely prefer the lace hem; i don’t know if they’ve changed this since my purchase, but the classic shortlette i have uses thread with zero give for the hem and for me, it’s simply unworkable. if you have thinner or more sharply-tapered thighs, they’re probably okay. as for the length -- again, if your thighs are more tapered toward the knee, the shorter lengths might be okay, but for me, they don’t offer enough coverage where i need it.
speaking of coverage, they also just give me a very valuable sense of security in my shorter skirts and dresses. like, i’m pretty good at wearing dresses, i generally don’t find it a hardship not to flash the people around me. however, some of my favorite dresses fall higher on me than they used to bc of weight gain and/or shrinkage, and while i don’t feel like they’re inappropriate for me to wear to work (yet), i’m also very glad not to worry about decency when i’m kneeling, crouching, or bending to find books, pick up toys, put paper in the xerox machine, or whatever. it helps.
but sigma, you say, if the lace hem is stretchy, isn’t there a risk that it will ride up? and yes, there is that risk, and sometimes it does. full disclosure, i wore a pair on tuesday as well and had to retreat to the empty workroom to tug the hems back down my thighs several times. i’ve found that the 9″ length stays put better than the shorter ones on me, and also that each pair i have behaves slightly differently in this regard. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
even when i dock points for the unforgiving classic hems and the riding-up issues, undersummers are by far my favorite way to combat summertime thigh-chafing (and, being that this is southern california, wintertime thigh-chafing, too). they’re a little pricey at ~$30 a pair, but still much cheaper than any of my bras tbh, and in my opinion, well worth it. good job, carrierae.

Friday night we went out to Fellini’s to celebrate Kevin officially completing his first year of medical school!! YAY! One year down, 10 more to go! AND my extremely intelligent husband honored ALL of his classes!! Woohoo! Way to knock it out of the park!
Saturday morning we had an appointment and it was SUCH a lovely day outside that I felt like wearing my new favorite dress!! (which you can find on Torrid HERE). It made me feel soooo happy! AND I didn’t cover my arms again. What is happening?! I had a shrug in my purse just in case I got self conscious but I really liked how the dress looked without it (and the open back is so cute!), so I went with it. Although, it was super windy downtown and I kept flashing bystanders with my undergarments. Whoops. Thankfully I was wearing my undersummers to prevent any thigh chafing.
After the appointment we went out for a keto-friendly breakfast of omelettes which were delicious (because they used so much butter! I’m definitely on board with that). Although, I ordered avocados on my omelette and didn’t get them. RAGE. I was going to dispute the bill but didn’t feel like conflict so I just paid for it.
When we got home, I changed clothes and mowed the lawn which desperately needed it. I can’t believe how much it grew! After the lawn was done I felt antsy so I went on a walk. Although, it was now 93 degrees out so I wasn’t moving very fast and didn’t get very far. I was a sweaty sweaty mess. Coming home and jumping into a cold shower was delightful, though!
Dinner last night was more Cali’flour crust pizza! This time we ate the jalapeno crust which felt floppier than the original but it was tasty! Although, I put jalapenos on my pizza so my mouth was basically on fire by the end of dinner.
I woke up this morning, excited to weigh in after my great day of eating and super productive day only to find I weighed in at the exact same weight as the day before. Since I still had over two hours before I could eat (thanks IF) I proceeded to go on a 4 mile walk. Thankfully, the weather dropped and it was a glorious 73 degrees out. I can’t believe how much faster I walked compared to the day before. Despite my phone only having 20% battery life I was able to have Runkeeper running and my Pandora station, “Show Me How to Burlesque” playing keeping me motivated. I’m proud to say that by the end of the walk Runkeeper declared that this was my fastest walk in the 2-5 mile range! YEAH!
Unfortunately, when I got home I felt super lightheaded and thought I was going to faint. BUT, I didn’t! I weighed myself after the walk and I weighed in two pounds lower HUZZAH! Breakfast was the famous @zerocarb and @lizzielosing inspired Keto Chow pancake!! It was super dense, as they said it would be, but really tasty! I ate mine with cream cheese but next time think I want to go more traditional pancake and eat it with almond butter and sugar free syrup.
I have no idea what to make for dinner tonight, might just go pizza again... Then I think I might go on another walk after dinner to continue to soak up this great weather.
Btw, I am now under my end of May goal of weighing 230. Fingers crossed it sticks!
Hope your weekend was pleasant!
(And no, I am not sponsored for anything I write about (although, by all means companies feel free to approach me to do so!) I just enjoying sharing what I wear, eat and enjoy!)

Thanks so much @undersummers for gifting me several pairs of these incredible comfy shortlettes. I pretty much live in dresses so I'm happy to of found my new go to #shortlettes underwear to wear under all of them. For instance this leopard dress I'm wearing in this pic is so much more comfy now that I have these little black shortettes to wear underneath. For now I just have the blacks and tan #Undersummers but plan to order many more in different fun colors soon.
