The Burn Journals 2/4/14
"I don't have much to say. I just stare up at the ceiling and wonder why I did this. I can't even really remember anymore. I know I was sad or something, but what was I so sad about? School and girls? Megan and Stephen? Setting fire to that locker? None of it seems like a big deal anymore." (Runyon 249)
According to this thought by Runyon while staring at the ceiling, it again appears as though the attitude one approaches death with and one's ability to accept its coming is heavily influenced by the way one view's the circumstances of his or her life. Runyon's view of his life prior to his suicide attempt was obviously bleak, hopeless, lonely, and filled with despair. Taking this into account, the thought of death was welcoming to him, offering a sort of repentance for all of his failures and shortcomings in life.
To others, Runyon's life, along with their own life, was not so worthless. Only when Runyon wakes up in the hospital for the first time and notices the abundance of cards, letters, gifts, and videos sent to him by his friends, family, and acquaintances does he realize that his life is worthwhile, ultimately changing his attitude toward death.
It's easy for some to say "Why would you ever want to kill yourself?" Those who say it lightly must try to understand that whoever is experiencing those thoughts is accepting death because life, to them, is hopeless.
Next time, instead of criticizing their thought, maybe try to add some value to their life so that their attitude towards death will be one of respect and understanding instead of desperation and desire.
