So, despite being devoted to the notion of personal freedoms bordering on anarchy, the Undercommon does have a government. And that government prints a currency. But, because of the whole liberty/anarchy thing, no one has to use it. ‘Legal tender’ my ass, we don’t have laws remember? So plenty of small communities use their own currencies or barter practices. Sufficiently dedicated individuals can print their own currency, and attempt to circulate it.
And somebody did. And it caught on in a bigger way than they ever expected. But like. As a joke.
Basically this guy living off in a tiny cave by himself (as opposed to living in a larger cave with a small village or something) decided to make his own coins with his face on them. And whenever he came into town for supplies or whatever, he’d try to pay with these coins and throw a fit if someone didn’t want to take them. And some of the local Cool Kids thought this guy was hilarious and started accepting his coins, and using them among themselves. You know. Ironically.
And it got to be a surprisingly widespread fad and its origins were more or less lost over the centuries but now there’s just. Places in the Undercommon. Where they will only take these shitty homemade coins, which are in short supply because the guy who made them only made so many and then died.
