Tess hadn't been particularly vocal about whether or not she supported the war in Vietnam. It had started when she had been just about eight years old. She didn't really understand the politics of it all and didn't care to. But she didn't see why some people weren't in support of the troops themselves. The draft sent them out to fight, unless they volunteered. It wasn't like they all were just out to kill and destroy in the name of whatever.
The troops had all been coming home over the last couple of months since Saigon had fallen. And she had joined a sort of welcome home committee. They made gift baskets with clothes, food, spirits. Things to help them settle in at home and the girls all dropped them off with the soldiers. Personally thanked them and wished them the best. Some sat with them to talk if they needed to, some even stayed and made them dinner with some of the stuff.
She had only one name on her list today. Steve McGarrett. He had been in the Navy, and had returned several weeks ago already. There was such a backlog that somehow no one had visited him yet. She took the little Civic they had loaned her over to the address on the card, hauling the basket onto his porch as she rang the bell.
It was a nice neighborhood. Beautiful, really. His house was surrounded by a lot of trees and she knew the water was close around the back. It seemed like the perfect place for someone to come after being in such a terrible situation. She only hoped he could find healing here.
