UM law society to march with Bar against Sedition Act
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 10, 2014:
The University of Malaya Law Society (UMLS) will be joining the Malaysian Bar Council in its walk against the Sedition Act 1948 on Oct 16.
The Walk for Peace and Freedom against the Sedition Act 1948 was initiated by the Malaysian Bar to raise awareness on the significance of freedom of speech and expression as a basic human right.
“The recent sedition charge against Associate Professor Dr Azmi Sharom suggests that academic freedom is under undue suppression, particularly at the tertiary education level.
“We are shocked, disheartened and disappointed that the government, instead of engaging in a debate or dialogue worthy of our aspirations to advance the nation, has chosen to stifle an academic who was rightfully expressing a remark within his field of expertise,” said UMLS president Chai Duwei.
The society regarded the charge against Azmi as a gross violation of the freedom of speech and expression in disregard of the sacred notion of academic freedom, and an attempt to intimidate and instill fear in the society at large to muzzle dissent.
“Such repression severely undermines any effort to elevate University of Malaya or other local universities into world-class institutions.
“We would like to stress that it is only with academic freedom that local universities can truly be a place of higher learning and excellence, where an exchange of vibrant ideas and opinions is possible,” read the statement.
It also drew attention to the Blue Ribbon Campaign, in which those opposed to the Sedition Act were encouraged to wear small blue ribbons.
UMLS labelled it as an exercise for the freedom of expression in itself that was launched as a demonstration of their commitment to uphold the freedom of speech and expression as well as the sacred principle of academic freedom.
“The UMLS believes that both the walk and the campaign will raise awareness on the significance of freedom of speech and expression as a basic human right.
“It is our hope that this walk will also serve as a platform for all members of the legal fraternity, students as well as academics, from across Malaysia to come together for a common cause,” read the statement by UMLS.
The society also pledged to continue to stand in solidarity with Azmi, saying he had relentlessly fulfilled his role as a scholar and educator.
“The UMLS reasserts that all charges against Azmi should be dropped and we call upon the Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Najib Razak) to realise his plan to repeal the Sedition Act 1948 and to commit that no law of such substance, whether in name or kind, be introduced to replace the Sedition Act 1948.”
