Anthriscus sylvestris (Cow Parsley). If you don’t like this beautiful native umbel, I think you may be past saving. #oneadayplant I’ll caveat that; if you don’t like seeing it in the countryside... You know when spring is turning to summer when the soft stemmed, but incredibly hardy Cow Parsley push upwards and flower begins. As the season rolls on, established plants of what is usually a short lived perennial become massive, easily towering over the tallest of interested parties. Look out for plants at 2.5m (8’) growing in India tribes areas at the side of the road in July-September. Flowers will become better developed than the first efforts (pictured) with a greater number of individual flowers appearing on later umbels. However I look at it, I see nothing but beauty and elegance, that greatly improves our countryside and larger gardens. It can swamp out smaller spaces, so I can see why people may not appreciate it in their gardens. Commercially, the demand from designers to grow it, especially for show gardens grows each year. It has overtaken sales of the purple-leaved form ‘Ravenswing’ on our nursery. Smyrnium olusatrum (Alexanders) #oneadayplant Tried this for Chelsea last year, but it flowers very variably in terms of date and was all over by the time Chelsea rolled around. Shame. It is a lovely plant. Not native, but a Roman introduction that has naturalised throughout the UK. A beautiful plant that is edible, though I must confess that I am yet to eat it at all. These are by a road, so I won’t eat them, but if I happen to see some elsewhere I might gather some for a blanching and eating. There are lots of umbels in the British Isles, so be sure you know what you are eating as some are harmful/toxic. Don’t guess. I particularly like the slightly glossy, rich green foliage of this plant, partnering the yellow-green flowers to make large colonies of fluffy cloud-like plants. Beautiful. Very tough and very easy. Seeds freely. Great verge or woodland edge plant.
