Let’s be Honest:
Roboute Guilliman
Some people love him, some people hate him; the Primarch of the Ultramarines is an extremely powerful model on the table top. The real question we must ask is:
Is Roboute Guilliman Overpowered?
Lets start with the stat line.
Move 8 WS2+ BS2+ S6 T6 W9 A6 LD10 SV2+
So looking at this he is the blend of any other large monster, combined with the power of a character. At S6 and T6 he is the same as a Hive Tyrant, but also comes with a SV2+ and only 9 Wounds. This means he can hide behind another unit and not be the closest character to be hit.
Weapons:
The Hand of Dominion has a shooting profile and a melee profile. The ranged weapon is a Rapid Fire 3 S6 AP-1 and 2 Damage. This is a very powerful weapon that can rip into light vehicles and any kind of infantry. As a melee weapon it is the same stat line as a Thunder Hammer, but without the -1 To Hit. This would make him a scary set of weapons, but he also comes with the Emperor’s Sword. This is something else entirely. Makes him S8, AP-4 and deals 3 Damage, but on a To Wound roll of a 6+ it will inflict D3 Mortal Wounds IN ADDITION to the regular damage. This is harsh. No denying. With the potential of dealing 36 wounds (6 attacks, all hit, all wound with 6+, the normal damage is 3 each and within this scenario deals all the Mortal wounds as well).
This is A LOT to digest, maybe looking at the Abilities will calm this monster down.
Abilities:
And They Shall Know No Fear- there for completions sake as a Space Marine.
Armour of Fate- 3++ and the first time he dies, he will return to the battle field on a 4+ with D6 wounds.
Author of the Codex- If the army is battle forged and Roboute is the warlord, gain 3CP.
Master of Battle- Add 1 to Advance and Charge for any IMPERIUM within 12 inches AND re-roll failed morale and To Hit rolls of 1.
Alright so far this guy scares the daylights out of me:
He can hide behind units, has an incredible save, unimaginably strong weapons, then he has the potential to return from the dead, he also buff all IMPERIUM around him. Prepare yourselves, the final ability is why Roboute is almost an auto-include in Ultramarines armies.
XIII Primarch: RE-ROLL ALL FAILED TO HIT AND TO WOUND FOR FRIENDLY ULTRAMARINES WITHIN 6 INCHES.
What does this mean?
A lot of HQ choices give re-rolls To Hit or To Wound, some in certain phases, but the Primarch allows ALL misses to be rerolled.
Combinations-
Basic troops like Intercessors can hit and hurt more.
Stratagems I would like to use on units around him, Hellfire Shells, Masterful Marksmanship, Killshot, Death to the Traitors and many more.
Another honourable mention is the Stratagem called Only in Death Does Duty End: When a ADEPTUS ASTARTES CHARACTER is slain (for Roboute this means his actual death) the model may immediately shoot of fight. So if your opponent is lucky enough to slay him in combat, it is very likely that Roboute will rise once more and slay them back.
Conclusion:
Stats- good
Weapons- incredible
Abilities- Too much, too good, there is literally no down side to this guy.
Points cost- ONLY 360 PTS, WHAT?! A LAND RAIDER IS 346 AND YES IT HAS MORE WOUNDS, BUT IT DOENST BUFF THE ARMY LIKE CRAZY
Deep BreatH
I am willing to admit that I play Roboute in my Ultramarines, BUT I will only play him if my opponent is able to handle him. He is not a younger player or a friendly players model. Play the Primarch at your own peril.
