I love Paul McCartney (i LOVE him), but him choosing to remove his songs from chord/tab websites, like UltimateGuitar, is really gross. Those websites, for those of you who don’t know, display the lyrics with the chords above them so people can play them at home. The transcribed songs are uploaded by members of the community, and they’re a great resource for new and old musicians.Â
He’s one of the only artists i’ve found that has done this, and i sincerely can’t find a reason why. I cannot think of a single way it would harm him or cause him to lose money. It’s not like there was any super secret or profitable information in there -- just lyrics, chords, and sometimes tabs, so people who love his music can play it themselves.
Isn’t the entire point of creating music to share it with the world? Hasn’t the love shared through song been like 3/4 of his career?? He has made his music inaccessible to everyone, except those who have the ability to play by ear or buy overpriced songbooks.
I’m sure it’s not him, it’s his team, but still. I find it incredibly selfish and short-sighted to put up this sort of block. People who adore this music are not allowed to play it and share it. Young Paul fans who have finally picked up a guitar have no way to learn his music without spending money they don’t have. I can’t help but feel like if he knew about this, he’d disapprove of it, but I honestly think he just doesn’t care. I’m really disappointed in him, and I’m honestly super frustrated that I can’t sing the songs I love. ffs.Â
