This coin marks a fascinating moment in Roman history: possibly the only time in known history that a woman may have ruled the Roman Empire. Ulpia Severina, wife of the emperor Aurelian has been proposed as ruling as a kind of interrex in the three or four months following the death of her husband in the autumn of 275.
