Uji, south of Kyoto, was a popular place for Heian nobles to build their villas. Today it’s arguably most famous for two things: world class matcha and the Tale of Genji (it’s the key setting of the final ten chapters known as the Uji Chapters). It’s much less trafficked than Kyoto or Nara, which is partly a shame but also makes for a fantastic experience because it’s a beautiful city. OBVIOUSLY I went to the Tale of Genji Museum, which is small but IMO so much fun for a fan as well as Heian era enthusiasts. I’ll save my geeky nerdtastic Tale of Genji stories for a separate post.

We had lunch at the Fukuju Saryo cafe in Fukujuen Ujichakobo, a combined tea factory-museum/shop/pottery atelier. All the dishes - sweet and savoury - incorporate tea/matcha and are served on handmade ceramics (Asahi ware). Think matcha soba, rice with conger-eel, warabimochi, and more. The weather was gorgeous - sunny and perfect for a shaded stroll along the Uji River.
