The Ugoos UT2 is constructed around the same CPU\GPU mix. Both comprise the RK3188 quad-core Cortex-A9 CPU and the Mali 400 GPU. The big difference is in the casing of the device. The UT2 is designed to function as mobile stick PC that you can take out with you wherever you go. The UT2, by contrast, is intended to be the centrepiece of your streaming entertainment hub. And the UT2 Smart TV Box is over double the size of the Roku 3 and absolutely dwarfs the Google Chromecast. But, the more significant case size brings with it a few apparent advantages.

Hardware:

The RK3188 SoC integrates four ARM Cortex-A9 cores clocked at 1.6GHz, Together with a 500MHz ARM Mali-400 GPU. Despite the recent advent of a higher-end RK3288, which unites four ARM Cortex-A17 cores with a 4- or 16-core Mali-T7xx GPU, a 4Kx2K movie decoder, also HDCP2.X safety, the RK3188 remains highly popular among makers of TV-oriented Android HDMI sticks and mini-PCs.

Employing the UT2:

I started off wanting to restrain the UT2 using an “RK Remote Control” app offered to us by Ugoos, but over my WiFi system, at least, there was much too much lag for a WiFi-based controller to work acceptably. (It comes with a tiny USB plug jack) Other than its shortage of Android-specific navigation buttons for Back, Home, and so on, the diNovo Mini functioned surprisingly well. A much better alternative is a more significant, Android-ready Bluetooth keyboard/touchpad — but I have not found the perfect one yet.

Main Home launcher:

After installing my favourite media-streaming and other apps on the UT2, and configuring its home screen, I snapped a few screenshots with the device’s discretionary (via setup) screenshot widget. Among additional tweaks, I substituted ADW Launcher for the device’s default home screen launcher and added Folder Organizer to enable increased flexibility in customising folders, including the ability to assign custom pictures to each folder’s house screen icon.

Design:

The UGOOS UT3S has borrowed the case from its predecessor, the UT3. Utilizing a 3D geometric pattern on the top of the case, the device is attractive and certainly stands out. UGOOS have opted for two launchers here. The box initially booted into the standard Android launcher that we’re all familiar with. Entering settings, we can enable the TVLauncher, which is far easier to navigate using a remote. It seems that the skin is UGOOS own creation, which is an excellent trend I’m starting to see from bigger Android media player manufacturers. The UI takes a function-centric approach, offering category folders such as “Games” and “Streaming”. Unfortunately, you’ll need to categorize your apps yourself but it’s very intuitive thankfully.

File Server:

File server (Samba) allows sharing files among different OS devices in the local network. This feature was one of the most popular functions on Ugoos boxes based on Android 4.4. and 5.1 based on RockChip and Amlogic SoCs. The file server can work via a Wi-Fi connection, but if the load will be big, may need to use LAN adapter via USB to make this function proceed more effective and fast. In this release, new local networks functions were added: NFS client and CIFS client. These functions make shared Windows folders visible in Android system. Samba server available in Settings – Ugoos settings – System – File server.

Hardware Monitor:

Hardware performance visualization is a useful feature if you prefer to control actual work and speed of your device. Now you can control your Box hardware performance more effectively. We added the ability to place animated graphic icons in the upper bar, which can show real-time main hardware values.

Wireless Assistant:

Users can control TV Box, play Android games with your mobile device being a wireless gamepad and share media resources with Ugoos Box through the application. You can activate Fantasy assistant from settings menu: Settings – Ugoos Settings – Wireless Assistant. Mobile application for IOS and Android devices you can download using QR code on the screen or run ugoos.net/remote/

Gamepad Settings:

GS let you extend personalization of your TV Box and get more advantages during gaming process. Just connect your favourite gamepad run Ugoos settings – Gamepad Settings. Debug Settings:

Another exclusive option will be useful for developers. Simple switchers let you connect a device to application diagnostics using ADB via USB or Wi-Fi. Also, Debug settings give the ability to gather Log files during TV Box processing. In first firmware, we already add some additional functions can be useful for casual usage and digital signage providers:

Screen rotation:

In Display settings, we add simple switcher in case if you need to use unusual screen rotate format. Besides Landscape and portrait format, we also add reversed versions of these positions and original mode to let applications choose rotation by system settings. Screen rotation also available in an upper bar like in cellphones.

Autoframerate:

Via playback of many video samples, we concluded that sometimes AFR function in KODI is choosing best options for playback due to different video parameters. For more convenience, we set tree options for Frame Rate: System resolution, Video resolution priority, Frequency resolution priority, Kodi has their own Frame Rate settings, so these options enabled in other players with using generic codecs.

This TV box from established smart TV box specialist Ugoos has a great lineup of specs and features and comes at a cheap price. This Android TV box is rocking the Amlogic S912 Octa Core CPU, It has 4 cores running at 1.5GHz and a further 4 at 1GHz which when combined with the 2GB of RAM provide plenty of processing power. TV box also benefits from the Mali T820MP3 GPU so it’s no slouch in the graphics department and can easily handle streaming movies. The AM3 TV Box is a compact and unassuming black box but don’t let its plain looks fool you. With its aluminium body, there’s good heat dissipation allowing for a fan-less design so it runs quietly so there’s no distractions or interferences.

Amlogic S912 SoC connected with heat sink via thin thermos gasket. Heat sinking works not bad, further device tests will confirm this. This side of PCBA there is also two Samsung chips. RAM based on eMMC KLMAG2WEPD-B031 made by Samsung, memory type – MLC (the same memory we can find in TV Boxes by Zidoo model names x9s and x10). Ethernet controller is Realtek RTL8211F. Wi-FI controlled by LTM8830.

HW MONITOR: You can set android so that the CPU load/ram memory and temperature are visible on your desktop. FILE MANAGER: You can specify where apps should be installed. You can assign this location yourself. ROOT SERVICE: You can easily turn on or off the root of the device. WIRELESS ASSISTANT: You can easily operate the device with your smartphone. SCREEN ROTATION: You can rotate the screen and use portrait mode for example. Ideal for Narrowcast / Digital Signage projects. AUTO POWER: The box starts (Autostart / Auto power) when you connect it to the mains. You do not have to press a power button. USB SWITCH: You can switch whether you use the USB port as an OTG port or normal USB port. LED SETTINGS: You can decide how the power LED is blinking, whether it is on or off.
