Oh darn. Looks like our fight was broken up by something. Was hoping for a lil more but in general I've always preferred One Piece action when it's more chaotic and free-flowing. Feels more organic.
This means nothing if you see her as nothing but a mindless zombie. The culmination of all that work humanizing her. That’s 100% the exact same technique we use with Kiku later. Her story feels so much more tragic than heroic because all the investment beforehand was for a cute, bubbly little sister.
It also tracks with something Thriller Bark does that Wano, particularly Kiku's story, will run with. Mistreating subordinates is one of the biggest berserk buttons in the series, by now we don't need to spell that out. No different from Brook and remembering how much Luffy wanted a musician, checking if you're paying attention.
The classic reveal of Brook’s signature move. This whole element of introducing him through Ryuma partially is quite clever. Good way to sidestep ever having to ask who’s the better swordsman between Brook/Zoro. Feels a lot like an echo of the huge foil dynamic between Kiku/Yamato. I’d also say an idea we use with the Akazaya in general. They act as a sort of “shadow” crew, a good group for our main cast to ping off of. Think of Robin and Kiku or Denjiro and Nami showing slightly different shades of a core component of the characters.
How congenial Ryuma’s zombie is to Cindry gets me everytime too. I assume she happily obliges. Or maybe they have like, a zombie thing going. Yeah...I’ll ship a pair of zombies.
Said this with the Black Maria fight I think, but I love the running gag that Chopper, Robin, & Franky seem to be pro wrestling fans. Bigass suplex dropping Hogback on his head is perfect!

Right at this point the series is vibe checking you with Hogback’s treatment of Cindry. How do you see her? Makes it the perfect timing to delve into who she was. Especially since Hogback is sitting here telling you! He clearly was earnestly fond of this woman to obsessive levels...but actively showing such contempt for respecting her body. Just to prove a point to an adversary.Â
Yeah, Absalom slamming Nami against the shower wall was graphic. Yeah it was triggering a bit. Hogback is still 1000x more disgusting in my book. And there’s nothing more to it than an inflated ego. Hogback’s “tragic” backstory was being turned down by a girl who was taken.
Robin getting to help too is nice. I like her sticking around for this as well. For all that’s been said about the Crane Wife allusion...Robin’s animal motif is a crane for the same reason. Her story in Enies Lobby plays with that territory too. Its a little more directly applicable to Robin even, for Kiku the point seemed more like a way of getting across the ladylike side for a "your best self is your whole self" sum total of all sides of you type of deal.
Still feel there was a missed opportunity to make one of Usopp's lies come true. All you needed was to swap the dango for jyagan grass-smoked Okobore BBQ. Beautiful swordswoman with a plate of meat.
