Residing in the coasts of Karnataka and Kerala border are a group of people who belong to a community called Moya. Moya community is also known as Moyar by the locals and recognized as Bovi . The people who belong to Moya community are called Moyars. There are some stories that say Β that there was a group of people in Kodagu district during the king rule who used to carry the pallakki (palanquin) of the kings, queens and other dignitaries. They were also secret messengers of the court. The story tells that once when Tipu Sultan attacked Kodagu, this group of people were scattered to different places. Some ran to Sirsi, some to Ooty, some remained in Kodagu , some to other unknown parts and a group of people came to the coast of Kerala-Karnataka border. Β These people are calledΒ MOYARS. They took up mainly fishing as their occupation as a means for their livelihood. Some even took up agriculture. The people of this community are spread from Trikaripuram in Kerala to Kotekar in Karnataka. Now of course they have migrated to different parts like Mangaluru, Bengaluru, Mumbai and even to the northern and to south most parts of India. Also, you can find Moyars in other parts of the world mainly UAE, USA, Canada and UK . The Moyars speak a language which doesnβt have a script. Officially, they write Malayalam as their language. But the kind of Malayalam(State language of Kerala) they speak is not even understood by the Malayalis though Moyars understand Malayalam well. Its just that Moyars donβt have Malayali acccent.
