Ubii
The Ubii were a Germanic tribe from modern day Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany. Their name comes from the Proto-Germanic word ubaraz or uba which means above/over. Their name either refers to a geographical location somewhere up North, maybe their original homeland in modern day Denmark, or the name was an expression of their superiority. I personally believe it refers to a geographical location because there are several other Germanic tribes named after their location.
Their first mention comes from Julius Caesar in his work 'de bello gallico. The Suebi were beaten by the Romans in 58BC at the battle of Vosges, they fled back towards the Rhine. The Ubii were their natural enemies so the Ubii chased down the fleeing Suebi.
The Ubii were in fact very friendly and welcoming towards the Romans. They became allies of Rome right from the start when Julius Caesar was active in Gaul. This was a wise move of the Ubii because they could now rely on the Romans to defend themselves against the much larger forces of the Suebi. The Ubii often supplied Rome with fresh soldiers and their capital, Oppidum Ubiorum, later became the basis of modern day Cologne.
Only three years later, in 55BC, the Ubii asked Julius Caesar for help in their struggles with the Suebi. This led to Caesar's crossing of the Rhine, an event which I quoted from Caesar in an earlier post. Caesar's crossing was the first time when Romans crossed the Rhine.
The conflict between the Ubii and the Suebi still wasn't over. In 53BC, Caesar again crossed the Rhine in order to deal the Germanics. The Ubii showed their loyalty towards Rome as Caesar fortifies a bridge that connected the Ubii to the Roman camp where 12 cohorts were stationed.
The Ubii started constructing the settlement of Oppidum Ubiorum in 38BC. 19 years later, a Roman colony was founded at this settlement by Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa. A camp that could house two legions was constructed nearby the settlement and it was renamed to Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium in 50AD. The settlement played a role during the Batavi revolt, about which I have written as well only a short time ago. This settlement, now known as Cologne, also served as the capital of Germania Inferior.
The Ubii's alliance with Rome lasted for centuries but nothing lasts forever. In 160AD the Ubii, together with the Langobards, crossed the Danube river and invaded Pannonia. Rome eventually defeated the two tribes but the defeated warriors were allowed to cross back over the river towards their homes after peace talks.
After this, nothing much is further known about the Ubii. We do know that between 260-274AD, the Rhine frontier collapsed, bringing chaos to Germania inferior. Postumus, a Roman lieutenant, murders the praetorian prefect, Silvanus and emperor Gallienus's son in Colonia Agrippinensium in 260AD, after which he declares himself as Emperor. Several provinces support him including, Germania Inferior, Gaul, Brittanica and Spain.
For the next 13 years, the wole north-western part of the Roman Empire was ruled by Postumus and his successors, serving as an independant state with its own emperors. The state was called, Imperium Galliarum, Empire of Gaul. The Ubii capital, Cologne, was chosen as its capital. The Gaul empire fell when Emperor Aurelian defeats it's military might during the battle at Châlons.
The Franks capture the colony of Agrippinensium in 455AD and thus the Ubii became part of the Franks.
