My thoughts on the Assassin's Creed: Unity debacle
So I've been thinking a lot today about the new Assassin's Creed: Unity game that's coming out. AC has been one of my favorite game franchises and I'm a little disappointed that all four (FOUR!) new protagonists are near-identical-looking white men.
AC:U takes place during the French Revolution. I'm no historian, but women and people of color played a huge role in the Revolution. So Ubisoft missed their prime opportunity to introduce a team of diverse, yet historically-relevant, assassins.
More generally, a video game (especially one from from Ubisoft) is a far-reaching piece of media. Like other forms of media (art, really) it's expected to imitate life. While women play far more roles in society now, our roles in games are often limited to being acted upon as plot devices. That's just sad. Surely we can do better.
