Duality Pt 1
How I’d love to see season 8 play out based on Keith in that trailer.
‘Get to your lions!’
Those words, roared against the streaming of dark quintessence, ricocheted around Keith’s skull. Where were they now, the Paladins of Voltron? Safe, he hoped. Together. God, let them be well. He dropped his head back against the seamless wall of the Galran prison. Lance’s face, slack and distraught, as he was tugged backwards and away by Pidge danced in front of his eyes when he closed them. His head throbbed; with pain, with upset. His nose and throat were thick with unspent tears. In the cold of the witch’s prison, all he could do was plot and remember, plot and remember. It was for the greater good, he told himself, to give himself up. Never mind the stoic press of Allura’s lips or how Hunk wearily shook his head, You’ll never change. He’d called Keith fatalistic when they’d argued in his hospital room after their return to Earth. Sometimes I think you want to die.
I’ve had ample opportunity. He’d regretted it the moment the door slammed shut, shaking a picture crooked on the wall. ‘Fuck you,’ he’d muttered to himself at himself, but the wolf had heard and too smart for its own good, fizzed out of the room, leaving him alone with his shame.
The door slid open and there she was, the witch. Haggar. A single thread of scarlet dissected the left side of her face. A few inches closer and he’d have cleaved her skull in two. But she was stronger. Faster. Altean. She’d snapped his marmora blade over her knee, then buried one half of it in the meat above his own. The fight was over from there. It was over from the start.
‘On your feet.’ Twin sentries marched into the cell either side of her. They heaved Keith to his feet and towards her, bionic thumbs threatening to snap his arms in two. He grimaced. The witch smiled. ‘So expressive.’ A clawed finger drew a line from his clavicle to his chin. ‘So soft.’
He drew his head back and spat. It connected with her cheek and simmered off in a matter of seconds. She cuffed him so hard his head connected with the sentry’s breastplate. He blinked at twin images of her that circled and circled as he recovered from the blow.
She sneered. ‘Large eyes, simple and stupid. A harmless little kitten.’
‘I wasn’t harmless when I left your kitten floating in the quintessence field.’
A slap that Keith was certain split the skin. ‘My son is a prince!’
‘Your son is dead.’
Tendrils of violet and black gathered around her darkening face. ‘Because of you.’
Keith smiled, and spoke words messy with blood and spit. ‘Because of me.’
She swiped at him again, hard enough to knock him to the floor. He coughed and rolled over, stilled, and let his eyes fall shut to see Hunk’s face again. To see Allura’s troubled eyes and Lance’s lips mouthing, ‘No! No! No!’ as Pidge pulled him away and into the cloud of quintessence.
Above him, somewhere in a dream, a voice said, 'Prepare him for the Tisiphone.'
