âAnd here you go.â The JYP representative gave a thin lipped smile, pushing the stack of contract papers in front of Chaewon. âPlease print and sign on the dotted line.âÂ
Chaewon pursed her lips. She had to make her decision, right here, right now. There was so much she could lose either way. If she stayed with JYP for another two years, there was no guarantee of her debut, and it would be another 2 years of her youth gone. If she left, there also wasnât a guarantee of her debut. But sheâd be free. And sheâd have Sunhee and Haeyoon with her. Finally, she hissed in through her teeth and tilted her head.Â
âUm, yeah, actuallyâŚâ Chaewon slowly slid the papers back towards the woman across from her. The JYP employeeâs smile started to melt.Â
âSo, hereâs the thing⌠I just⌠Iâm feeling a little trapped here? Like⌠I donât really think signing trainee contract after trainee contract with no sign of debut is like⌠wise for me.â Chaewon scratched the back of her neck. God, she wished Sunhee was with her right now. Sunhee was the one who knew how to talk to people. Â
âSo, are you terminating your training with JYP Entertainment?â The employee asked, her frown dipping even lower, creasing her face in a disapproving line. âThis is a big decision, Chaewon. We wonât accept you back if you do this.âÂ
The warning made Chaewon feel uneasy, but her intuition was a little too strong to be swayed by passive aggressive corporate employees.
âYes. I am. Sorry.â Chaewon added the apology reflexively. The JYP representative gave an unamused chortle.Â
âNothing to be sorry for. Please have your personal items removed from the building within the next 24 hours. I wish you the best of luck.â Chaewon was given one last, thin-lipped smile before being escorted from the office room.Â
At the end of the hallway in a small sitting area, Chaewon found Sunhee, who had waited for her since her own meeting had ended twenty minutes ago.
âYou didnât sign, right?â Sunhee demanded, a glimmer of fear in her eyes.
Chaewon furrowed her eyebrows. âHell no. What kind of person do you take me for?âÂ
Sunhee beamed before hugging her friend tightly, swaying the two of back and forth.Â
âThis is the best day ever!â Sunhee cried gleefully, pulling away from her friend. Suddenly Sunheeâs expression dropped and her hands flew up to her face.
âWait⌠I didnât tell Hyunjin.â Sunhee remembered. Chaewon gave a long blink.
âYou forgot to tell your second best friend about the biggest career-related move youâve ever made?â Chaewon questioned in disbelief.
âHow am I gonna tell him? Should I just wait until he asks me where Iâve been or-â
âSunnie.â Chaewon cut her friend off. âWeâre going to go see him now. Heâll respect your choice. I know he will.âÂ
Chaewonâs prediction was a little off.
âYou did what?â Hyunjinâs jaw dropped. His exclamation echoed off the hallway walls. Chaewon cringed a little, but Sunhee stood her ground.
âHyunjin, you know JYP isnât going to debut a girl group anytime soon. Thereâs no point in Chaewon and me staying here. There will be more opportunities for us outside of JYP.â Sunhee reasoned, crossing her arms.
Hyunjin ran a hand through his hair, letting out a mirthless huff of disbelief.
âHave you signed with another company yet?â Hyunjin asked, looking between the two girls.Â
âUh,â Chaewon looked at Sunhee. She knew something was missing from their plan.Â
Hyunjin smacked his palm to his forehead and tilted his head back. âYou guys.â Hyunjin groaned in disbelief.Â
âWeâre going free agent for a while.â Sunhee improvised. âWeâre gonna scout out some different companies, see who we like best, then decide.âÂ
Hyunjin brought his focus back down to the two ex-trainees in front of him.Â
âI just worry about you two.â Hyunjin admitted, any anger or annoyance in his voice was now replaced with concern. âWhat if we never see each other again?âÂ
Sunhee rolled her eyes. âHyunjin donât be ridiculous. We still go to school together.âÂ
A smile quirked on Hyunjinâs lips. Silently, he pulled Sunhee in for a hug. Chaewon let them have a few seconds before inviting herself into the hug.Â
The three friends huddled together, patting each otherâs backs reassuringly. Their moment was interrupted when someoneâs shoulder brushed past them, entering the practice room that they were currently loitering in front of. Chaewon looked over in time to see Han Jisung dip into the practice room soundlessly.Â
Hyunjin made an annoyed sound in his throat. âI canât believe you guys are leaving me with him.âÂ
Sunhee rolled her eyes. âI think youâll manage. You have a good four inches on him anyways.âÂ
âTrue.â Hyunjin tilted his head, as if imagining all the ways he could whoop Han Jisungâs ass.Â
Before the trio could say anything else, Jisung stuck his head outside of the practice room, a frown on his face.
âHyunjin, practice is starting.â He said stiffly.
âItâs Sunhee and Chaewonâs last day, Iâm saying goodbye.â Hyunjin responded in an equally as stiff tone. Jisungâs expression softened a little, his eyes widening.Â
âWait, really?â He asked, looking between the two girls. Jisung wasnât exactly their close friend, but theyâve known each other for so long, Chaewon was going to miss seeing him every other day.Â
âYeah, we didnât resign this morning.â Chaewon explained. Jisung blinked in amazement.
âWowâŚâ He stated, clearly at a loss for words. âGood luck.âÂ
Chaewon gave a soft smile. âThank you. You too.âÂ
âWe better find Haeyoon.â Sunhee suggested, patting Chaewon on the shoulder. This was Sunheeâs way of saying âletâs get the fuck out of hereâ. Chaewon nodded. The girls said their final goodbyes to the boys before heading down the hallway to the elevators.Â
Chaewon didnât realize Sunhee was crying until they got into the elevator. Silent streams of salty tears traced down Sunheeâs cheeks, dripping from her chin and onto her shirt. Chaewon furrowed her eyebrows in confusion.
âIâm going to miss him.â Sunhee explained simply, her voice barely above a whisper. Chaewonâs shoulders slumped in empathy before hugging her friend comfortingly. Sunhee buried her face in Chaewonâs shoulder, letting out sobs.Â
âDid we make a good decision?â Sunhee wondered aloud. Chaewon couldnât help but laugh.
âSunnie, it was your idea!â Chaewon giggled. âAnd all your ideas are good ideas.âÂ
Sunhee raised her head from Chaewonâs shirt. Her face was blotchy and red, but she still had a small smile on her lips. âYouâre the only person alive who thinks my ideas are âgoodâ.âÂ
âThatâs because you have a very unique vision, Sunhee. Not everyone understands it.â Chaewon reached up to wipe some stray tears away from her friend's face. The elevator finally dinged, signaling the girls that they reached the ground floor.Â
The doors slid open and a wide eyed Haeyoon was looking back at them. The older girls eyes scanned the two friends up and down.
âWere you guys cuddling in the elevator?â Haeyoon asked in shock. âWithout me?âÂ
Sunhee laughed, breaking away from Chaewon. âSorry, Yoonie.âÂ
âItâs all good.â Haeyoonâs ever-present smile returned to her face as the trio walked towards the main exit. Haeyoon removed her trainee lanyard as they got closer to the door, swinging it over her head like a lasso, aiming for the large trash can near the door. Once they were in range, Haeyoon released the cord, watching with satisfaction as her JYP identification card sailed into the trash can.Â
âHey, no throwing in the lobby!â A security guard chided.Â
Haeyoon looked over her shoulder with a smirk. âNo worries sir, Iâm already seeing myself out.âÂ
Sunhee, whoâs mood seemed to be heightened since they exited the elevators, threw her lanyard away too. Chaewon ripped hers off, looking at her ID picture one last time. She seemed so much younger in this picture, despite it only being taken two years prior. The picture smiling back at her didnât resonate anymore. She wasnât who she used to be, and she wasnât going to find the new her at JYP Entertainment.
With a satisfying clunk, her ID hit the bottom of the barrel. Chaewonâs smile couldnât be erased as she stepped out of the building with her friends, ready to take on the world.Â

TITLE: Rock Bottom

Soojin turned off the faucet and stared at the chipped pink nail polish on her toes, listening to the drip of the water fall from her body and onto the tile floor. The only thing rousing her from her daze was the sound of the apartment door slamming open and then shut again.
âSoojinnie! Iâm home!â Jisooâs cheery voice rang through the small apartment that the two girls shared. Soojin reached for a towel and wrapped it around herself, stepping out of the shower and out into the hallway.
âJinny, youâre dripping water everywhere!â Jisoo started to scold, but her tone didnât carry over when her friend turned to face her. The blank look on Soojinâs face broke Jisooâs heart. âHere, go get dressed. Iâll make us dinner.â Jisoo said softly.
When dinner was served, the two girls sat across from each other, not speaking. Soojin was toying with her food, but the chopsticks in her hands never came close to her lips. Jisoo put down her own chopsticks and pursed her lips, unsure how to console her friend.
âYou know, itâs been nearly five months.â Jisoo started slowly. Soojin didnât look up from her plate. âI know youâre not under YG anymore, but thereâs so many other companies out there that would be so lucky to have you.â
The other girl scoffed at this statement. Jisoo furrowed her eyebrows. âIâm speaking the truth.â
âJi, I appreciate your concern, but I donât think I want to be an idol anymore.â Soojin said flatly. There was a thick silence in the air.
âI also think Iâm going to move back with my parents next month.â Soojin said quietly, but her words still echoed in the kitchen.
âWhat?â Jisoo looked shocked. The two of them have been living together since Soojin became a trainee at YG. The idea of Soojin leaving and no longer being her roommate was unsettling to Jisoo.
âYeah, thereâs no point in me staying here.â Soojin shrugged. âI mean, youâre going to be moving out soon to live with your new group mates and thereâs no work here for me. I think living with my parents is kind of my only option.â
âStop acting like your life is over!â Jisoo snapped, getting tired of her friendâs sulky attitude. âIf you get out there, you will get picked up by another company and you will debut. You have too much talent to just go to waste! Living with your parents is rock bottom, and you are nowhere close to being rock bottom.â
âIt sure doesnât feel like I can get any lower.â Soojin sulked. Jisoo sighed and shook her head, picking her plate up.Â
âYou have so much to live for. You just need to open your eyes.â She said quietly before placing her plate in the sink and hurrying to her bedroom.
Soojin warmed up her voice and made sure the camera was on her. She had exactly three hours until Jisoo returned from practice, and she still had so much to do. Itâs been two days since Jisoo and Soojin had their little argument in the kitchen. Soojin figured that her friend was right. She hadnât hit rock bottom yet. She just needed to get back into the game.
After pressing record on her camera, she stood in the center of her living room, took a deep breath and then opened her mouth.
âHello, my name is Min Soojin, I am 20 years old from Seoul. I will be singing to the song âWhen I Grow Upâ by Seventeen. Please enjoy.â She smiled and bowed politely before she started singing. Her voice wasnât as fluid as it used to be from her daily training, but her talent really did shine through. She finished filming with another bow before rushing to turn the video off.

JULY 3RD, 2015 - FINALE
âAmazing job girls!â S.O.Tâs manager congratulated them as they entered the dressing room, panting hard and sweat layered over their skin. Tears had stained their cheeks and smudged their makeup, but they didnât really care. They had just given their debut performance. They were idols now.
Micha went around shaking peopleâs hands and thanking staff for all theyâve done for her. Once she thanked everyone, her stylist sat her back down in a chair so she could redo her makeup and hair before they had to go back on stage for the finale.
She noticed a large bouquet of daffodils on her vanity. Her heart skipped a beat. Who else would give her daffodils?Â
She looked around, hoping to see Asahiko somewhere among the staff, but she had a feeling he wasnât here. She hasnât talked to Asahiko since she last called him that night. Their schedules were just too busy. She wanted to see him so bad that the thought of him being in this building with her excited her.
âWhere did these come from?â Micha asked, knowing they came from Asahiko, but wanting the confirmation.
âYour friend dropped them off when you were performing. He had to leave, but he said there was a letter for you.â A manager informed Micha, gesturing to the envelope that was nestled in the bouquet.
As her stylist redid her hair, she took the note off the flowers and opened it slowly.
Dear Micha,
Or should I be calling you Yen now?
Congratulations on your debut! I hope it was everything you wanted and more. From the moment I saw you dancing in that practice room, I knew you had the potential to become an amazing idol. And I was totally right. Like I always am.Â
Youâve gone through many hardships to get to where you are and I hope you are as proud of yourself as I am proud of you.Â
Iâll work hard so I can be good enough to be able to perform side by side with you on stage. You continue to inspire me, even after all this time.
Want to know a fun fact? Daffodils represent new beginnings. How fitting.Â
Anyways, hereâs to your new beginning as the ever-talented, totally brilliant, spectacular Yen!Â
Lots of Love,Â
Asahiko/AsaÂ
P.s we should totally get ice cream tonight. My treat.
Micha and Asahiko left the convenience store with ice creams in their hands. They walked out of the lights of the shops and pulled down their face masks so they could enjoy the icy treat before it melted.
âSo, youâre an official idol now. How does it feel?â Asahiko asked as he walked beside her, licking his ice cream.Â
âHonestly, I kinda feel the same.â Micha shrugged. âBut that also might be because everything is so surreal to me still.âÂ
Asahiko nodded in understanding. âAt least youâre not a total diva anymore.â
âAnymore?â
âYou went through that diva phase not too long ago.â Asahiko reminded her. Micha frowned and bit her ice cream, knowing he was right.
âAnyway, Iâm the same old me, except now Iâm an actual idol singer.â Micha said before looking up at Asahiko. âAnd youâll be joining me soon, Asa.â She emphasized Asahikoâs stage name. âIâm getting you the biggest bouquet of flowers for your debut. Your whole dressing room will be covered with them when you get off stage.â
âWhat did I do to deserve a friend like you.â Asahiko said semi-sarcastically.
âI donât know, but I think we were destined to be apart of each otherâs lives. Maybe this is our like, tenth life together or something.â Micha said thoughtfully, taking another bite of her ice cream.
âWhat would we have been in our past lives?â He asked curiously, a smile forming on his lips.
Micha thought for a minute.
âTwo daffodils that were lucky enough to grow right next to one another in a flower patch.â She said. âEither that or two freezer burned watermelon ice creams.â
Asahiko laughed at the idea and threw an arm around Michaâs shoulders.Â
âEither way, we ended up next to each other, despite the odds.â She said, wrapping her free arm around Asahikoâs torso.
âIs that your cheesy way of saying youâll always be by my side?â Asahiko baited.
âYes. It is.â Micha looked up at him and gave him a toothy smile. Asahiko returned the smile.Â
He may have confused feeling about Micha, but he knew one thing for certain. Whether they were freezer burned or sunbathing, they would always have each other. And for that he was forever thankful.Â

WHITE DAY, 2015
White Day wasnât looking so great for Asahiko. Daehyun dragged him and Injung to the florist early in the morning so he could get Soyeon some white roses. Asahiko thought it was a sweet gesture, but did the two other boys really have to come along?
When he voiced his complaint, Daehyun arched an eyebrow.
âI thought youâd want to come pick out something for Micha.â He said bluntly, shocking Asahiko.
âWhat? Why would I do that?â He said quickly.
âI mean, I thought you two were like⌠A thing.â Daehyun shrugged, looking over the roses that stretched out in front of them.
âWeâre not a thing. Weâre just friends.â Asahiko said in an annoyed voice. How many times did he have to repeat himself?
âFriends donât leave parties together and then hang out in a bedroom alone for three hours.â Injung shaded, his fingers running over the petals of flowers. Asahiko rolled his eyes.Â
âNot this again.â He groaned. When the HBH boys came back to the dorm on Valentineâs Day, they saw Micha and Asahiko sitting under a blanket together watching a movie on Asahikoâs bed. Ever since then, heâs been bullied by his friends and teased constantly.
âAnyways, Iâm getting Eunha white flowers for White Day, since she gave me chocolates on Valentineâs Day.â Injung said, glancing over at Asahiko. âFriends can give other friends stuff on White Day. Maybe Micha would like a little gift?âÂ
Asahiko rolled his eyes for the nth time. Even though he fronted as opposed to the idea in front of his friends, he thought it would be nice to give Micha something. He let his eyes wander until they landed on a specific flower.
He tried to look indifferent as he walked over to the white daffodils and picked up a couple of them.
âHey, Soyeon, Happy White Day.â Daehyun said, coming over to Soyeon and the others while they were leaving the building that night. He held the small bouquet of white flowers in front of Soyeon, who looked a little uncomfortable with the gift, but she accepted it anyways.
Asahiko felt the small collection of white daffodils in his bag grow ten times heavier. Next to him, Micha was gushing over the present.
âHow can Daehyun and Soyeon deny dating rumors when theyâre out here being the cutest pair at HBH?â she said quietly as they left the building and made their way to the subway.Â
âYeah, but something tells me Soyeon isnât very interested in him.â Asahiko said, watching the other two walk side by side awkwardly about twenty feet in front of them. Micha huffed out a laugh as they approached the subway station.
Asahiko was getting anxious about giving Micha her gift. He should have done it that afternoon during lunch, but thatâs when Injung gave Eunha her gift, and he didnât feel like stealing their thunder. There hasnât been a ârightâ moment yet, and they havenât been alone.
It was only when they were about three stops from where they had to get off of the subway did Asahiko open his bag and hand Micha the crumpled up white daffodils and half-crushed cookies that he got her earlier.Â
âI should have given you these earlier, but there didnât seem to be a right time. Iâm sorry. Happy White Day.â Asahiko was slightly embarrassed by the state of his gift. Micha couldnât help but laugh as she accepted the gift.
âI mean, itâs a mess, but itâs from you. Therefore, I love it.â She grinned. âThank you.âÂ

JUNE 20TH, 2015
With Tromme practicing harder than ever and S.O.Tâs debut being just around the corner, their time together was extremely limited. Sometimes they saw each other for lunch breaks, but most of the time they both skipped lunch to focus on practicing. Their texts became sporadic and irregular. It was almost like their whole friendship was taking a hiatus.
This was good and bad for Asahiko. Bad, because he needed a friend during this stressful time in his life and he missed Micha everyday he didnât get to see her. Good, because he was taking this time to focus on his career and not the crush that he was slowly developing on Micha.
Practice was a great way to ignore these feelings. During rehearsal he only cared about getting the footwork down and perfecting his rap flow. His mind was taken over by music and performing, there was no room for not-so-friendly thoughts about his friend.
But still, every night when he got back to his dorm and looked up at the ceiling, he couldnât help but wish Micha was there too, resting her head on his chest like she did that one night.
He was thinking of that day when his phone buzzed beside his bed.
MICHA: are you up? [sent: 2:09 am]
ASAHIKO: yeah, you good? [sent: 2:10am]
MICHA: yeah, I just canât sleep. [sent: 2:10am]
MICHA: and I miss you. [sent: 2:10am]
ASAHIKO: I miss you too. [sent: 2:11am]
MICHA: can I call you? [sent: 2:13am]
ASAHIKO: yeah, of course. [sent: 2:14am]
Michaâs caller ID popped up on his home screen. He dragged his thumb across the call button and put the phone up to his ear.
âHey.â He said, sitting up a little straighter.
âHey.â Micha responded, her voice sounded drained.
âYou canât sleep?â Asahiko asked, concerned.
âYeah.â Micha said, sounding a little embarrassed. âIâm just stressed lately and I find your voice very soothing.â
Asahikoâs heart thumped in his chest at those words. âDo you want me to like, do ASMR or something?â Asahiko chuckled, trying to not sound flustered.Â
âNo, silly.â Micha chuckled herself. âJust talk about anything. Like⌠how was your day? I want a detailed run through of what you did.â
Asahiko could hear her smile through the phone, but he ignored it and shifted himself so he was laying on his back again and staring at the ceiling.
âWell, I woke up at around five this morning to go to practiceâŚâ He said softly. He recited his day to Micha, who hummed every now and then as a response. After a while, he humming started to become more and more infrequent. Eventually he heard that light snoring that he found so adorable. A lazy smile spread across his face.
âGood night, Micha.â He whispered before beginning to hang up.
âWait.â Her sleepy voice said through the phone. âThank you.â
Asahiko grinned a little wider. âYouâre welcome.â
âI love you. Seriously. Youâre such a good friendâ she said, her voice lulled, clearly half asleep. The combination of âI love youâ and âfriendâ together sent an ache through Asahikoâs stomach.Â
âNo problem. Go to sleep.â He said softly before hanging up. He dropped his phone on the nightstand beside his bed and stared up at the ceiling, replaying âI love youâ in his head until sleep consumed him.

JANUARY 26TH, 2015
The meeting ended and the trainees filed out in a mixture of excitement and mild confusion. The concept of the new debut group, Triptych, was explained in detail, but the subunit concept still threw off some of the trainees. The information that B.A.D would be one of these subunits for the super group made some eyebrows shoot up. It was all very unexpected, but based off how much detail had gone into the plan, this had been thought out for some time now by the company.Â
Asahiko found Micha in the wave of trainees that were now making their way to the locker rooms and pulled her aside.
âAre you okay?â He asked her.
âHuh?â Micha questioned, the smile that was previously on her face was fading.
âI mean, this new group concept is kinda stealing your thunder, isnât it? Youâre not going to be just a three membered group now, youâre going to be just one part of a huge group.â Asahiko reasoned. He figured his friend wouldnât be too pleased about having to share her spotlight with a bunch of other people, but to his surprise she was laughing.
âDonât be silly, this is the best news we could have ever gotten! â She chuckled, turning around and heading to her locker. Asahiko followed her, unsure if his friend was totally sane right now.
âBut like⌠You worked so hard just to find out youâre in a subunit.â Asahiko said slowly.
âKoko, the debut group is going to have male members.â She grinned, grabbing her bag. Asahiko huffed out a laugh. âTheyâll be your groupmates, not your boyfriends, Micha.â
âAsahiko⌠are you seriously not getting what Iâm saying? Itâs a good thing youâre cute.â Micha teased, closing her locker and grabbing his shoulders, looking him in the eye.
âThe new group can have male members. You are a boy.â She said slowly.
Realization crossed over Asahikoâs face.
âWe could be in a group together.â He realized. Micha nodded, her smile spreading even wider.Â
âI gotta go practice.â Asahiko said hastily, grabbing his stuff out of his locker. âWe will debut together, Micha! I promise!â He called as he slung his bag out of his locker and slung it over his shoulder.

NEW YEARS EVE, 2014
Micha was finally able to wear what she really wanted at a company party for New Years. She went all out too, because she wanted to make up for the ugly pictures staff took of her, Yerin and Eunha at the Halloween party. No doubt there was going to be pictures taken tonight, and she wanted to look good.
âDamn! Look at the maknae!â Soyeon called out when Micha walked into their shared living room.Â
âWow.â Yerin commented, taking in the younger girlâs outfit. âI wonder how Asahiko will react.â
âHe wonât react.â Micha rolled her eyes and the older girls chuckled to themselves.
âAlright, well, let's get going, we donât want to leave Michaâs boyfriend waiting.â Eunha stretched and got up from the couch.
Asahiko was already bored at the New Years party. He knew things would get better once Micha showed up, but right now he was getting a little tired of Chunghee and Injungâs bickering.
âIâm telling you, I was in a relationship!â Chunghee flew his hands up in the air in exasperation.
âWith who then?â Injung questioned, looking unamused.
âI canât say! Itâs confidential!â Chunghee said it as if was obvious. âSheâs a trainee under SM!â
âRight, and Iâve secretly been dating HyunA.â Injung chuckled.
âIâm being serious, bro!â
âWoah.â Changmin spoke up for the first time since the four boys sat down at their table. Asahiko turned around in his seat and had to blink a few times.
âIs thatâŚ?â Injung squinted.
âB.A.D.â Daehyun confirmed, his eyes wide as well.
Micha caught them looking and waved quickly to them, smiling politely before following her group mates to shake hands with the head producer and founder of the company.Â
âBro, you gotta set me up with Micha.â Chungheeâs hand clapped over Asahikoâs shoulder. Daehyun gave Chunghee a death glare and the boy removed his hand slowly. âUh, that is if thereâs nothing going on between you two.â
âWhat? Of course there isnât.â Asahiko said, snapping his attention away from Micha and her group mates. âSince when are you interested in Micha?â
âI mean, sheâs always been pretty, so, I guess sheâs always been on my radar.â Chunghee said thoughtfully. âExcept for when I was in a relationship.â
âDude, you gotta let it goâŚâ Injung rehashed the previous argument, but this time Asahiko really wasn't listening. Did everyone find Micha attractive? He knew she was pretty, but he never really thought much about how other people probably found her pretty too.
It was all he could think about when the whole company gathered around to watch the ball drop and Micha was standing right next to him. They were standing awfully close, since everyone was gathered around the television, including staff members.
 âFIVE,âÂ
 Asahiko looked down at Micha.
âFOUR,â
He remembered that one time he kissed her on the couch in the boyâs dorm.
âTHREE,â
He thought she was pretty when he first met her.
âTWO,â
Did everyone think Micha was beautiful too?Â
âONE!â
The room exploded with cheers as the ball dropped. People pretended to kiss one another dramatically, others had their arms wrapped around other people. Asahiko was still staring at Micha. When she turned to face him, her smile brought him back down. He copied her smile and hugged her tightly.Â
âOne more year of friendship!â Micha screamed over the noise.
âHell yeah!â Asahiko yelled back, but he couldnât bring himself to say the word âfriendshipâ.

MARCH 21, 2013
She was hypnotic when she danced.Â
Asahiko had never seen anything like it. All of her movements were fluid and connected, molding together like a spoken language instead of a physical action. She looked like she was absorbed in the music and rhythm, and it made it hard to look away. Heâs never seen anyone do anything so passionately.
Every day for the past week he got to the studio a little earlier just so he could watch her dance before heading into the practice room next door and starting his own rehearsal. He knew he shouldnât be wasting time, his first monthly evaluation was just a week away, but watching her dance motivated him to do better in practice. Maybe if he worked hard enough, he could dance as fluidly as the girl in the practice room.
He accidentally kept staring even when the music stopped and her motions ceased. For a split second their eyes met in the mirror. Asahikoâs heart leaped in his rib cage and he backed away from the glass door, silently cursing to himself. He walked as fast as he could to the dance room next door, trying to find refuge. The door, of course, was locked. Just his luck.
âHey!â He heard a voice call from down the hallway, and the girl who was previously dancing was walking towards him, her fist clenched.
This is it. Asahiko said to himself as the distance between them grew smaller. Sheâs going to kill me, right here, right now.
âYou dropped this.â The girl held out her hand, holding his keys in her palm. Asahiko blinked a few times at the girl, his mouth agape. She was a lot prettier up close. Her eyes were a dark chocolate color and her lashes were lush. He was used to seeing attractive people (he looked at one every day in the mirror when he got ready), but for some reason her beauty was different. It was unexpected.
âThank you.â He managed to get out, taking back his keys and sliding them into his backpack.
âAre you the new Japanese trainee?â The girl asked bluntly out of curiosity.
âYes.â Asahiko said with a small smile. Internally he was cursing at himself for knowing such limited Korean. He wanted to tell her more about himself, but the language barrier was restricting him.
âMy name is Micha.â The girl, Micha, said in Japanese, extending her hand. Asahiko took it, his eyebrows shooting up.Â
âDo you speak Japanese?â He asked, his hand still shaking Michaâs up and down.
Micha hesitated. âNo. Only a little.â The dancer said in an apologetic tone.
âI only know a little Korean. We are even.â Asahiko said with a grin.
âI guess we are.â Micha chuckled.Â
âHey, Asachiko!â Another voice said from down the hallway. Coming towards the two were the boys Asahiko had been practicing with for a couple months now. Even though they were nice guys, they always mispronounced his name, no matter how many times he said it for them. Asahiko realized he was still holding Michaâs hand and released it immediately.
âHello.â Asahiko greeted his fellow trainees, wondering if they saw anything that just happened between him and Micha. The other two greeted Micha politely before walking into the practice room.
âI have practice,â Asahiko explained, feeling sorry that they had to part so soon.
âNo worries. See you around, Asachiko.â Micha said with a shrug before turning on her heels and walking away down the hallway.
Asahiko watched her leave. She didnât say his name right, but it still rattled in his ears like a mantra. It was the sweetest noise heâs ever heard.
