Lydia is a very internal character in the earlier seasons, and since Cora isn't introduced then, I can't see them getting together then. Cora is a very external character- she's very physical, not only in her wolf stuff but also due to how she serves the story by simply being there.
I think that, no matter what universe they're in, Cora and Lydia wouldn't get together until after Lydia has her whole redemption arc/realisation about who she is. I feel like Lydia would have to grow from her very logical and manipulative phase (season 1) to be in the right space to date Cora.
If they dated before then, which is something I can see happening if Cora went to Beacon Hills High and was popular, I don't think they'd stay together very long. I feel like it would be very toxic and definitely unhealthy for the girlies.
In canon, I can see them connecting physically during season 3A when Cora is introduced. I can see it being purely physical at first, with emotions coming later, maybe after Cora leaves Beacon Hills. Distance makes the heart grow fonder or whatever.
There's also a world where, in canon, Lydia reaches out to Cora at the beginning of s4, though that would only be something that would occur if Lydia and Cora became friends in s3A... Lydia would reach out to Cora about Derek in s4 and Cora would def come back to Beacon Hills... I can see them having a very weird relatiosnhip at first, just friends and maybe Cora feeling something more... probably Lydia making the first move though, because I see her as someone who, once she realizes she likes someone, isn't going to pussy-foot around it
I think once they get together, they are a POWER COUPLE. Because can you imagine Lydia's brains and Cora's physical strength??? It would definitely be crazy. I think Lydia would be really astonished at the trust Cora would put in her and probably be really wary of it at first... Cora probably also would be wary of it, knowing what happened the last time a Hale trusted a human like that, but I think if they communicate, they could get through it.
Cora is definitely more external with her style of communication. I think we see that pretty solidly in the show with how bluntly she speaks. Lydia, on the other hand, is better at communicating with body language or through sarcasm/manipulation. These two communication styles can def work well together, in that Lydia never has to worry if Cora is having a bad time somewhere or doesn't like spending time with her. Whereas Cora, with her wolf abilities, can easily tell that, despite Lydia's griping, she is having fun.
I think they definitely interact in a way that is strange to outsiders but works well for them. They definitely are really annoying to outsiders because Lydia has to do very little actual speaking to get her point across to Cora, which can be strange when you know Lydia because she's very talkative.
If they ever move in together, it would be really interesting, because I feel like Lydia is very particular about where things are and what belongs in which spaces, whereas Cora is really messy and the kind of person who treats putting things down in a place as belonging there. They definitely had a real fight about this, like a week or two after moving in together. Compromises are made, but it's always going to be hard for Cora to try and put things where they 'belong' according to Lydia.
Cora, to me, works somewhere where she can be active, such as a personal trainer or a sports coach. Lydia is very obviously going to go on to do something crazy with maths or physics. They are definitely supportive of each other's jobs, but I feel like Cora is always a little envious of how much time Lydia spends working and just wants to cuddle her girl after a long day at work.
I don't think they'd ever have kids, either through adoption or IVF or whatever. I feel like neither of them would be really into that. They both value their jobs and their alone time and just being free to spend time with their family, pack, or each other, so I don't see kids in their future.
Lots of yapping just to say, I really think they would work well together, though I can see them always having some issues to work through. Communication is going to be something they are always working through, and I think that's kinda beautiful!
