you had been counting down the days until your birthday for the past month and a half. with all of your past birthdays going horribly to say the least, you were determined to make sure this one was one you’d remember—for good reason, of course.
you looked out your bedroom window, the sky as blue as can be as the trees danced in the wind. you knew today would be great. your favorite pink floral dress was freshly washed, the one that flowed with the breeze and fit you perfectly. the subtle heat from your curling iron on your neck did nothing but make your stomach preform summersaults, excitement filling your body.
there were no plans for the day, all of your friends being busy and your family one plane ticket away that you definitely not afford at the time. all you wanted to do today was enjoy the perfect weather and take advantage of the day. you set out after finally finishing getting ready, you hair in a half up half down tied off with a pink ribbon, your cheeks brushed a light pink and a slight dust of glittery eyeshadow on your eyelids. you felt beautiful.
you walked down the sidewalk, letting yourself soak in the sunlight and the sounds of giggling children playing in the park. it reminded you of your childhood. times where all that mattered was what kind of mermaid you were or what magical power you possessed.
the familiar cake shop door greeted you, the sweet scents leaking out of the building. the bells on the door chimed as you walked him, an employee acknowledging you almost immediately.
“hi, welcome to ____, can i help you find anything today?” you looked up to see an unfamiliar face, the fact being unusual since you knew basically everyone who worked here considering you’ve been coming to the shop for years.
his hair was dark with a couple of blond streaks and fell just around his equally dark and thick eyebrows. he had the sparkliest eyes you’d ever seen on a human, his eyelashes longer than yours even when wearing mascara. it was hard to let out even a simple sentence without sounding like an awkward teenager.
“well, i’m looking for a cake. something with pretty designs, strawberries and vanilla flavored!”
he looked down at the glass display infant of him for a moment before speaking.
“i think we have exactly what you’re looking for!” he reached down into the cake display, pulling out the most prettiest cake slice you’ve ever seen with beautiful designs all over. there were pink swirls and ruffles, slices of strawberry and buttercream in-between layers of cake. your favorite part about it all was the strawberry sitting perfectly on top, you could just tell my looking at it it’d be the perfect cake for you.
“that looks great!” you beamed. “can i get one slice?”
he smiled at your response, his teeth so perfectly straight and bright.
“alright, that’ll be $10.30 is that for here or to go?”
you thought for a moment. if you got the cake to go, you could sit at the park and enjoy the weather and the view. if you got the cake for here on the other hand, you could sit and enjoy the soft music playing in the background and potentially strike up a conversation with that new cashier.
in the end you chose to stay, racking your brain for any conversation starter when a voice shot through your thoughts.
“so, is today something special? you look so nicely dressed i couldn’t help but wonder.”
you looked up and saw the cashier looking at you, heat rising up your cheeks and neck and eventually reaching your cheeks.
“well, today’s my birthday so i wanted to treat myself.” you darted your eyes to avoid eye contact, scared that he could sense the nervousness in your face.
his face lit up and he practically started bouncing up and down behind the cash register.
“really? that’s crazy because today is my birthday too!”
you perked up instantly, a jolt of energy flowing through you.
“how old are you turning?”
“21, what about you?”
your mind practically short-circuited. this was the first person you’d met that had the same birthday as you, and it made it even better that he was just your type.
“i’m turning 21 too!”
suddenly, he turned to retreat into the back of the establishment, telling you to wait while he gets something. you tried peeking into the back but all you could see were worker whisking and piping away. maybe he was getting another slice of cake? or maybe he had to go tell the news to the rest of the employees.
just then he walked back out holding a few candles, grinning from ear to ear. a few familiar faces were following behind him, their smiles also as wide as his. before you could register what was going on the lights switched off as the boy made his way towards you, lighting the candles and clearing his throat.
“happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear..stranger, happy birthday to you!” their voices were all mixing together, the whole thing just chaotic yet so sweet you couldn’t tell if you wanted to break down laughing or crying.
“make a wish” he said, his voice softer than before.
“do it with me, it’s your birthday too after all!”
he chuckled slightly before leaning in, counting down from three and blowing out the candles alongside you. the room erupted into applause, the lights switching back on as you looked around. the boy was about to return to the cash register until you grabbed his wrist, careful not to be too aggressive.
“wait, can you come sit with me? i want to get to know you.” your cheeks were burning at this point, but you knew you couldn’t miss this opportunity.
his eye softened. “of course.”
he sat down across from you, shifting in his seat a few times before finally getting comfortable. without realizing it, hours had gone by, and your stomach and cheeks were sore with laughter. you noted how the boy—who you now have learned is named dohoon—loved cracking jokes and watching you struggle to catch your breath after each and every one, and how he lowers his head when flustered.
now walking out of the shop, staring down at dohoon’s saved contact in your cell phone, you couldn’t help but feel excitement and hope jolt through you. you took a deep breath of the fresh air and watched as the wind rustled the tree branches.
today was definitely a birthday worth remembering.
