With a full tank of petrol, guitar, books, tea, and a camera I headed up the coast for a daycation.
These are the best kind of adventures in my opinion; lose the map, just drive, see what happens, stop if something catches your eye, take the dirt roads, end up in the middle of no where and just enjoy every second of it. My first couple stops were developing communities and neighborhoods by the beach. The thought was that since they boast “Beach-side Community” and still in the beginning stages of building, the beaches will obviously already be there but the people will not. First time I attempted it, the roads to the beach were blocked by construction a couple kilometers from the water so I found a dirt side road and decided to follow it. My car isn’t exactly meant for off road or anything near it, but I have faith in Betsy, so I led her, rattling like a tin can onward, until sand dunes rose on either side of the road and my sense of adventure took over as I jumped out of the car to go explore. Rolling sand dunes, vibrant flowers and sweet-smelling brush greeted me as I topped the first hill and gazed below. I entertained myself for awhile, sprinting up and sliding down the dunes but soon tired and headed back to the car. I vowed to bring an old skateboard or surfboard next time to increase the intensity. Venturing back onto the main road, I drove for a solid 30 minutes before a sign reading “Two Rocks” caught my eye and I cruised down the roads toward the supposed Two Rocks. I arrived in a little parking lot, grabbed my guitar, water and book as I strolled down to check out the beach. A lady and her excitable puppy passed me on the way down and all I hear is “It’s all yours now, it’s empty and man, is it beautiful.” Best sentence she could have uttered; I relish the moments of silence, just me and majesty of nature so I shouted back a quick reply, and quickened my step, stoked to see the empty beach that lay ahead. It was exactly as she said; just me, sand, sea and sky. Well, and a large rock slightly split in two out in the water for which the beach is named. I stayed there for a little over 2 hours, just soaking in the beauty of it all. Right before I left a friendly couple in their 40’s came over, sat next to me and we chatted for awhile. I asked mid way through the conversation, is there any place from here to Perth that is empty, just you and the Ocean?” They glanced at each other smiles playing on both their lips and said “Buddy, you’re sitting on it. Two Rocks seems to have been forgotten, no one comes here anymore.” Another sentence I was overjoyed in hearing. So, I guess I lucked out, I wandered into my own little slice of paradise.
