But now? Sitting next to his husband with a watermelon daiquiri in hand, watching their kids fight over the last piece of raspberry cake, he finds himself feeling like the luckiest person in the world.

“Something on your mind?”

Luigi is brought out of his musing, letting his gaze lead back to Bowser. “Hm?”

“You have your thinking face on.”

“Oh.” He takes a sip of his drink. “You ever think of how far we’ve come? Like-” Fiddling with his loopy straw, Luigi offers a small smile. “It’s been years, but it feels like it’s also been just yesterday that we married. I… never thought I’d find happiness like this.”

“Oh.” And Bowser seems speechless, even if it lasted a few seconds. “A lot, actually.”

“Really?”

“Yeah.” And Bowser sips his own mango daiquiri. “I- after we married… I thought about how much time I’ve waisted chasing after someone who didn’t like me back. How many times I’ve hurt someone- hurt you…”

Luigi scoots closer, leaning into his husband’s side. “It’s alright.”

“I- it’s not alright!” Bowser brings him closer, barely keeping his daiquiri unspilled as he violently shakes his head. “We would have avoided all that political bullshit- maybe it would have made everything better if I hadn’t thought of kidnapping Peach at all!”

“And if you didn’t, we might not have met at all.”

He could hear Bowser’s breath hitch. And while Luigi hates bringing in bad news, even his husband knows that- short of emergencies- the likeliness of a homebody like him venturing into Bowser’s view (and eventual interest) would have been astronomically low.

“So… I can’t regret that- fighting you. Not when it lead to us meeting each other.” And Luigi squirms just enough to reach Bowser’s jaw, caressing the underside with his knuckles. “Not when you ended up making me the happiest man alive.“

He receives a snort. “Then let’s agree to disagree, cause you make me the happiest Koopa alive.”

And Luigi couldn’t help but giggle as Bowser nuzzles into his neck and huffs into his ear (which he knew made him ticklish), holding Luigi still as he tries to squirm away.
