Please, can someone explain to me what exactly happened on Twitter and why Double D is disappointing us? Apparently I didn't get it.
David joined Twitter. David followed Gillian. After two weeks she followed him back, her opening salvo consisting of an ominously punctuated: “Hi David.” David then replied in a very friendly manner, espousing that he “heart[ed] Scully.” He employed a winking emoticon. Gillian responded that she, in turn, “heart[ed] Mulder all the way from Belfast.” Hearts around the world swelled with pride, surprise, and warmest feelings. Gillian followed this up with a doodle (allegedly) portraying herself and David in separate beds on separate continents, to which David responded in a friendly but noncommittal manner, with affectionate nicknamification.
The exchange was reported on by celeb/gossip media. Coinciding as it did with David’s press tour, he was asked about it on talk shows. A week after the “hearting” incident, Gillian replied to an (unrelated) picture David tweeted of himself looking rather dashing in a limo on his way to said talk show. She initiated the first volley in what appears to be an ongoing joke that they live together (based on press rumors cf. shackin up), going so far as to call him “babe.” David obligingly played along, calling her “babe,” feeding her a pretty easy line (“anywhere you need me to be?”) and referencing another inside joke about her need for height enhancement when in close proximity to him.
Gillian, awash with the unanticipated fun of joking with her not infrequently taciturn, formerly uncongenial, erstwhile television husband in public, took up his line and responded with characteristic impudence, in a way that some took to be startlingly forward. (To wit: “There’s only one place I need you to be and no ramp required.”)
This was April 23rd. Although it hung somewhat jaggedly without rejoinder, it was the kind of rimshot one-liner that could conceivably end a mutually satisfying flirt-off.
On April 27, David tweeted another (unrelated) picture of himself directing Cali, joking about his state of dress (a kimono). Gillian tweeted to him, joking that he had borrowed it from her. David did not respond.
On May 4, in response to a fan, David @’d Gillian in his reply, saying (incorrectly) that it was the same kimono he’d worn in “Full Frontal.”
