As shoots are beginning to develop on the crowns of herbaceous perennials it is the time of year to cut back old flowering stems that have survived the winter and provided shelter for the insects. Here Chelone obliqua (twisted shell flower, turtlehead) is still providing interest with last year’s seed heads, that followed the pink flowers, but these will soon be removed at the base to provide room for new growth.
