21 Lessons Year 21 Has Taught Me
1. Choose your battles wisely. 2. It is impossible for me to separate personal and professional when people I love are involved. 3. The people who teach you the most valuable lessons are not typically on your side. 4. People will cry for serious reasons and for silly ones, allow them space to cry or arms to cry in. 5. One person’s “silly” is another person’s “serious” 6. Sometimes you have to pretend the negative people in your life don’t exist. 7. It is impossible for me to put pants on two legs at a time without jumping into them. 8. Remember that we’re all going through stuff, no one is immune. So be nice, or at least tolerable. Don’t let your unnecessary actions become someone else’s reason for a having a bad day. 9. Sometimes you just have to throw your hands up, scream, and then laugh. 10. Friends, the deepest kind, have bonds that extend beyond state lines and transcend time. 11. Show grace and mercy, but temper them with fairness and honesty. 12. Laugh in public. Loudly. 13. Go with your instincts, leave no room for self-doubt. Provided that you haven’t seriously injured yourself or someone else, mistakes and unfortunate outcomes can be lived through and learned from. 14. Always smile at people in hospitals, it almost always makes their day better. 15. Accept that you are not perfect, but don’t give up trying. 16. Read aloud. It helps with diction. 17. Reflect. Often. 18. Money. You either have it or you don’t. Make sure your roof is still up, your lights still on, and water still hot before buying new Toms. 19. Cooking your own food is incredibly rewarding. 20. Have friends that keep you honest and kind. 21.It’s wise to carry, hide, and buy multiple sticks of deodorant.
Bonus Lesson: Love always gets its mark. Don’t force it, don’t hide from it, just go with it if you are moved to go. Be sure to take your brain along the ride.
