Off by about 6 months, but thank you for the sentiment! Unless you meant this for another blog, but even then, it’s still nice. XD

We decided to use they/them for all the fallen humans as it was consistent with Undertale. The experience of one’s own sex matters, too, though; one way or another, it will determine a lot of things in someone’s life (and that’s not even getting into whether one is happy with theirs or not).

We think gender non-conformity is an important thing to acknowledge, so we wanted Frisk to be a rough-and-tumble female child with a boyish appearance and a big heart, and we wanted Chara to be quite a sensitive male adult with a multitude of hairstyles who is in a homosexual relationship. Most of these choices don’t particularly impact the story, so anyone who stumbles upon Caretaker and never sees anything but the comic itself will be free to imagine whatever they wish for the characters.

Suffice to say, we don’t just throw darts at a board and pick whatever they land on. We put a lot of thought into what everything means, and what things might mean for everyone. We’ve had people from many demographics reach out over the years and say things to the effect of, “I’m glad you made [character] look like this because I can really relate,” and that pretty much sums why we do things the way we do.
