JD: I did get to a third season with a show thatās gotten popular and also the fact that MTV is a very progressive network. They know that weāre here to tell a great story and if it fits the story and itās the progression of the character then why not see all types of people have romance on television so weāll keep moving forward with it. - Jeff Davis interview [x]
Thereās a live discussion aboutĀ how much bisexual relationships are portrayed, do you find that your show is not being viewed as sort of a representation of that community, like how you have relationships like that in the show now do you feel like itās your responsibility to that community?
I always feel like my first responsibility is to tell a great story, so thatās what we go for. If we can remain socially conscious, thatās great too. Itās a balancing act, I think, because you donāt want to get into a situation where youāre suddenly preaching, and I donāt Teen Wolf to become a show where itās hammering the audience over the head about the message. So long as it builds out of the story naturally and is a great story line for the characters, then yes, but as a gay man myself, I am always looking to represent more of the stories in ways that I donāt really see or havenāt seen as a kid. I think there are a lot of great shows out there with great representation. - Jeff Davis @ 2012 NYCC [x]
have you heard eaddie's podcast and what she said about sterek and stydia? It really pissed me off, i'm sick of all this double standard shit about derek and stiles' age gap. it's fucking homophobia is what it is
Okay, so Iāve just been chatting about this with the meta group. Itās a bit of a Catch 22. Fans ask the actors/actresses for their personal opinions, but then people get upset when they share them. The thing is, actors and actresses are only human, and with a show like Teen Wolf they only know so much. Their personal opinions are really just that - personal. That said, there is an issue, because they will never be ājust fansā like the rest of us. Their personal opinions are perceived by the larger fandom as having more weight and authority to them, because they work or have worked intimately with the show and the writers.
Personally, eaddymays opinion on Sterek, and on Stydia to an extent, isnāt one I share. With Stydia, itās not a pairing I ship or like because it was very much one-sided. However, it makes me uncomfortable that so often people flag it for being a negative pairing because Lydia was rude and mean to Stiles - Lydia really didnāt owe Stiles anything and I wish more people would move away from this criticism of women being mean to men who make unwanted, discouraged advances on them. With Sterek, flagging it for its age difference is always going to be controversial, because this criticism tends to happen most when the characters involved are either same sex or involving an older woman/younger man. Older man/younger woman pairings are notoriously common in fiction, and especially in the fantasy/supernatural genre (Buffy and Angel began when she was 15 and he was 200 yr old vampire turned when he was 26 - a much bigger age gap than Sterek), but they donāt receive anywhere near the same criticism. In defence of Eaddy, she raised this point in a Buzzfeed interview a while back:
Kristen (host): (Reading off the questions from YouTubers) āāJoecoolioā says, āHey Kristen, can you please bring up the fact that Stiles is like sixteen years old, which would make Sterek impossible to do until heās at least eighteen years old, seems like nobody ever brings that up.āā
Eaddy: āOh please, itās sci-fi! Okay, does anybody bring up the fact that like, hereās Holland, I mean, Lydia and that creepy moment where Peter opens the door and I was like ācreepy uncle, donāt touch me.ā You know. So, we sort of go ālalalalaā over some of that and itās all imagination. The whole Sterek thing, and that fantasy, and folks can go with that.ā

I really do think the age gap issue is just her personal opinion and people should accept and respect that as a āyour kink is not necessarily my kinkā deal. I do find it interesting, because it got me thinking - can we really consider Stiles (or Scott and Lydia) a child at this point? This is a story about Scott, Stiles and Lydia moving into adulthood, growing up, gaining independence and accepting themselves - I think that denying them that goes against the point of their narrative arcs, especially regarding Stiles who is both in the closet and has spent seasons trying to get people (particularly his father) to listen to and believe him. Equally, I would argue Derekās story has been about growing up and becoming an adult, because his childhood was taken from him at such an early age. As for the ages, we know Lydia, Scott and Stiles are coming up to 18 this season. Itās also been heavily hinted, both by the text and by those involved with the show, that Parrish and Lydia is on the cards. We know Parrish is 24, the same age as Derek. So the argument against Sterek in regards to the age difference really falls flat there, even if Marrish doesnāt happen, because the latter hasnāt received the same level of critique regarding the age gap that the former has, and we have to question why.
But I digress, eaddymays is entitled to her opinion, she warned people at the start her podcast was going to be nothing but brutally honest, and I believe we should respect that. We can disagree with her views and engage her in debate, which she has been very open to - but really, what is screaming homophobia or calling her names (as Iāve seen some people do) going to achieve? If someone shares their opinion and shows and interest in debate, engage them- donāt scream them down.
Itās not every day you find an actor who loves fanfiction as much as you do, but Eaddy Mays (Victoria Argent,Ā Teen Wolf) certainly fits the bill.
Fandom is an internet phenomenon that has been quickly gaining speed and shows no signs of slowing down. A lot of actors are still trying to digest the power of social media and the destruction of the fourth wall, but a few have already accepted these changes. Orlando Jones (Sleepy Hollow) immediately comes to mind as one of those pioneers, and so does Eaddy Mays.
We talked to Mays about a variety of topics, including her character fromĀ Teen Wolf, but the focus of our discussion was on fanfiction, including why she thinks itās so popular, her perception of the mediaās portrayal, and if she believes itāll be just as prevalent several years down the line.

I think so. I think there's a good shot of that. I know that people are already talking about it at the network so we'll have to wait and see on that but I think there are definitely conversations about going beyond season 5. The young cast that's coming in now, Dylan Sprayberry and Khylin Rhambo, they're great! It's so amazing to me, you know Dylan Sprayberry came out to surf with me a couple of weeks ago and he's such a good kid and he's a kid! I mean he's 16 years old and you forget the energy and the dynamics and the mindset of a real 16 year old. It's just beautiful! It's limitless energy and just a whole different kettle of fish. I think that they're a great addition to the show.

My favourite sport is baseball and one of my favourite baseball memories is, my dad always worked weeks so he could never come to my games during the week. He could only make it on the weekends. It was my last year of little league before I was going to the big diamond. I was a small kid and fast and I was good at baseball. I always dreamed of hitting a home run and getting to jog around the bases. Where I played at, all the fields in New Jersey, there were no fences so you could never hit a home run. Then when I moved to California, it was my last year on the little league diamonds so basically my last chance. I was like, 'Iām never going to hit the big oneā¦' I wanted to hit a home run all season and this one game I had during the week, I had two in one game. I called my dad to tell him about it. He wasnāt there and it was so sad. I wanted my dad to see so badly. He was like, 'Iāll see the next one!' Then Iām in the next season at the play offs, I havenāt hit another one. My dad still hasnāt seen me hit a home run so itās a weekday, playoff game and itās literally the last inning and I come up with two odds. Iām in the on deck circle looking up at the stands cause my dad was trying to make it if he got off early enough and heās not there, itās just my mom and my sister. So I go up to bat and itās 2 to 1 and I hit a home run and tie the game. Then literally as I was running third and coming home, my dad was in the stands and he literally said he got there right before I cracked it and he saw it. It was the coolest moment of my life. Itās still one of my favourite moments.

Tyler Posey and I have a crazy connection. Back before he got cast in the hit āTeen Wolfā and before I was a writer for MTV, I graded his papers.
Wait, back up. Right after I finished high school, I got a job helping teachers by grading papers for an online school. One of the students I regularly graded was named Tyler Posey, and he would write about going to auditions and his dreams of being an actor. Oh, and he was a very good student, in case youāre wondering.
After this, we both went our separate ways (and both separately found ourselves at MTV). Until now. Tyler has great news with hisĀ new pattern at Serengetee, and 15% of each purchase goes straight on over to theĀ Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. This is an org Tylerās been big into supporting, so I wanted to ask him about how people can join in helping LLS, and how young people can follow Serengeteeās lead to help causes they care about. Oh, and maybe I asked him a question about school. I couldnāt help myself.
