They say turtles are great starter pets. And I'm gonna be honest, i think that's bull shit. Turtles are a lot of work. A LOT of work. And money. You have to clean their tank regularly. A big tank for a healthy turtle can be 700 dollars. You need a really good filter. Those can even be 300 dollars. You need a stand that will hold a 75 gallon tank and the water it holds. You need proper basking areas so they get an on their shells. They only sell basking platforms for small turtles and small tanks. Most platforms only fit 20 gallon tanks. My girl was only in 20 gallons for 4 years till she needed space. Now me and my husband are in invent mode. Turtles are very hard to care for and often discarded. I dont want to give her up because I'm scared no one will take her and the rest of her life will be pet store and giving her up. I dont want to yet. I haven't given up on giving her what she needs. Shes my girl and she saved me before. Please think long and hard before you get a turtle and do your research. Be prepared to drop a lot of money! I really think a cat is an easier pet, especially a first pet. I think theres a turtle problem for sure.
