Steal-Off 2: just checking in with you....
Hi guys! Hope you are all having a pleasant Sunday :))
First of all, before I hop into the meat of this post, let's have a little update on how our leaderboard has progressed since Friday:
🥇 Éponine/Cosette (168) 🥈 Enjolras/Combeferre (89.1) 🥉 Valjean/Javert (77.9) [+1] 4. Jehan/Montparnasse (77.1) [-1] 5. Éponine/Montparnasse (27.4) 6. Turning Woman #3/Musichetta (21.2) 7. Courfeyrac/Marius (18) 8. Enjolras/Grantaire (15.6) 9. Enjolras/Feuilly (6.6) 10. Combefere/Courfeyrac (5.5) 11= Marius/Cosette (5.3) 11= Joly/Bossuet/Musichetta (5.3) 13. Combeferre/Grantaire (0.7)
Congratulations to Valjean/Javert for narrowly overtaking Jehan/Montparnasse for a provisional place on the Steal-Off Podium!!
Now, to get to the point - we are over halfway through the submission window, 32 different ships are eligible to have works submitted (NOT even counting the theoretically infinite number of ships you could steal for as part of the newcomers' tournament!!) and currently we have only had submissions for five ships, zero of which are new entries. Additionally, of the 25 submissions we've currently received, TWENTY of them (that's 80%!) are for one of two ships - Éponine/Montparnasse or Valjean/Javert.
Now, I MUST stress that I am NOT saying this to criticise or attack Valvert & Montponine nations. On the contrary - I am absolutely THRILLED that these ships' fanbases have gotten so thoroughly into the spirit of Steal-Off 2, and you can all give yourselves a pat on the back!!
However, I would have loved to see this level of participation across a larger number of ships. After all, that's why we announced Steal Off 2 weeks in advance - to give you all time to prepare your works and give us a steady flow of new and exciting content throughout the week!
I might be worrying about nothing - people get busy, some of you might have loads of fanworks in the pipeline that just haven't been submitted yet, there's still 3-ish days left in the Steal-Off, anything can happen. But if I can get to the bottom of any potential causes for what is currently a rather unusual stealer turnout pattern, hopefully we can come up with some solutions that work for everybody!
So, I just wanted to have a quick and low pressure and honest check in with any potential stealers for currently underrepresented Steal Off 2 ships (especially fans of the 19 ships who saw no works submitted during the actual tournament too!) and ask:
What, if anything, is preventing you from submitting works for Steal Off 2?
I don't have time right now - I'd love a longer submission window!
I’d love to steal but I have no ideas :(
I honestly just don't care about Steal Off 2 & can’t see this changing.
I don't care, but this could change with more incentives/rewards on the table.
I don't care, but something else could change this (let us know!)
I'm confused by some aspect of the rules or submissions process.
I didn't even know this was happening to be honest with you 😬
I've got one or more steals in the pipeline but just haven't submitted them yet!
Something else - let us know in the replies or via asks!
MOD BUTTON ONLY DO NOT TOUCH PLEASE <3
(please note there’s no see results option except for the mods; please do not vote unless the question being asked applies to you!)
Your feedback is greatly appreciated - if we get a good idea of what, if any, issues lie in the way of you submitting the steals your OTP deserves then we can take the appropriate steps to make Steal Off 2 a more accessible and inclusive fanwork party for all of the fandom, not just the fans of 2-5 ships who've gotten really rightfully enthusiastic about the whole thing! <3
Turnchetta
@pilferingapples, @amysterywrappedinanenigma, i think you were the most vocal supporters of Musichetta/Turning Woman #3, so have a little fic I wrote for them!
Musichetta has known women who laughed all the time and women who only wept into their handkerchiefs, but after the night-into-day-into-night of the barricades she becomes aware of a woman who is always turning. She looks back over her shoulder to look for a voice she thought she recognized or she flips through a book of scripture to find the right passage to comfort a woman who's become a widow before she was a bride, or she turns some treasured trinket over and over in her palm.
What happened this June has happened before, she says, because no one ever listens, and it will happen again because no one ever hears. They, the women left to clean up these messes, are the only ones who truly understand the cost of progress, but even with that cost, the Turning Woman insists that it is worth it to keep seeking the light that illuminates.

happy 1st april! 🤡
Turnchetta HCs:
-Turning woman#3 is a struggling single mother (basically canon but still)
-Musichetta is very engaged in society and asked Jolly and Bossuet to join them in the fight but she wasnt allowed. She feels both angry at them for making her stay home while they died but also relieved that she didnt die. Both feelings riddles her with guilt. She often projects that guilt on Turning when they first get to know each other “why didnt you help? You were in the neighborhood where they died!”
-Turning woman couldnt risk her life because she has children to care for but she had wished more than anything that the revolt would succeed, for something, anything to change.
-Turning is a foil to Fantine. They are both struggling mothers but while Turning loves her children she also feels so trapped by them. Fantine sacrificed everything she had for Cosette and wanted to be with her more than anything but turning mourns the time she had before and struggles to show up for her children and even get up in the morning. She didnt mean to become a mother just yet, she wants her life back.
-once Musichetta gets to know Turning better she understands her point of view. They bond over womens and workers issues and all the wars that arent fought in the streets. She helps around with Turnings children and when they talk about poetry and art in general it is as if something in Turnings eyes lights up again
-one time Turning could leave her kids alone and join Musichetta for a walk in the park. Musichetta talked passionately about everything she had read recently and reminisced about her Jolly and Bossuet, when they saw a swing on a tree. Musichetta lit up and insisted that Turning tried it. Turning was shy but got convinced. On that swing Turning felt lighthearted for the first time in- she couldnt remember. It was late summer, it was still warm, the trees rustled in the wind and the birds were lively, the sky was deeply eternally blue and clouds where puffy and flew by, only covering for the sun for a few moments before everything was light again. She felt it all so vividly. The thrill of flying, the wind playing with her hair, and Musichettas hands pushing her firmly forward. Something about her hands on her back felt just right. Musichetta always managed to push her just enough for her to feel alive again but never too harshly. Her small hands were always someway gentle.
But then, she stopped pushing, and the swing slowed down. Once the swing was almost still, she felt Musichettas arms embrace her from behind and Turning looked back, meeting Musichettas face inches from hers.
It was as if their breath became one. Everything was silent. Musichetta tugged a strand of Turnings hair behind her ear and let her hand linger. Turnings heart raised. Then, before she could second guess, she closed the gap between them and kissed Musichetta. Musichetta kissed back passionately. Turning took hold on her collar as if to pull her closer. She felt, that this moment is eternal, no matter how long it would last.
This could turn into years.
"Wait," I hear you say, "I'm hearing different things about the canonical Turning Woman #3." Which seems impressive to you: how can a fandom argue about a character that, despite being essential to the text and deeply provocative, has at most three solo lines and (speaking generously) two and a half minutes on stage?
Because 2013 Fandom is a mass hallucination under the influence of Tom Hooper's aesthetic.
You heard it here, folks: it's time for a
TURNCHETTA SCHISM
"Right," you're thinking, ignoring this lesbian text like it's the mid 2010s and yuri is a perpetual afterthought, "like the entire ship—"
No! Valvert, you have Crowe. Enjoltaire: Blagden. Turnchetta has Gina Beck. Credited as Turning Woman #3, she has none of the lines sung by Turning Woman #3 in the libretto. This has nothing to do with the fact that the Turning Women were re-numbered based on appearance on screen rather than being credited based on original lyrics. No! This was a deliberate alteration of the character by Tom Hooper, much like he shaped Crowe's performance to be like that of a particularly damp cocker spaniel and hired Kermit the Frog as a vocal coach for Eddie Redmayne. And fandom ran with it, ignoring established canon. I certainly am neutral on this, much as I've remained entirely amenable to Crowe's Javert. I simply bring to the attention of our reborn Turnchetta fandom that we can do better this time have multiple texts to draw from.
You want to be able to judge for yourself what to base your characterization of Turning Woman #3? Well.
I have video. I present to you: the definitely less quality Gina Beck in 2012, the third actor to sing:
To follow, the thematically on-key and comparatively thought-provoking stage-canon Turning Woman #3.
