Tumble dryers contain a rubber seal that helps trap heat inside for faster drying, but this seal can detach over time, preventing the door from closing properly. When this happens, the rubber seal will likely need replacement before the appliance can function again. Addressing this issue promptly is advisable to restore the tumble dryer's efficiency and prevent further damage.
Dealing with a smelly tumble dryer? After identifying and resolving the root cause, try these steps to eliminate lingering bad odours:
Remove and thoroughly clean the lint filter under running water. Empty and sanitise the water reservoir using white vinegar to kill germs. Clean the condenser box with vinegar to banish mould and bacteria. Wipe down the drum, door, and seal with a vinegar-soaked cloth, lifting the seal to reach underneath. For vented dryers, detach and clear the vent hose of lint buildup.
Finally, place vinegar-dampened cloths in the drum and run a cycle - the vinegar will neutralise any remaining funky smells. Your dryer should now be fresh and odour-free.
There are two main types of timers found in tumble dryers: digital timers with an LED panel displaying the time, and mechanical timers with a dial to adjust the drying time. Digital timers can run too fast due to a dirty moisture sensor, needing a reset, or a defective control board. Cleaning the sensor, resetting the timer, or replacing the control board may resolve the issue.
Mechanical timers running too fast could be caused by a loose spring that needs lubrication or replacement, a defective spring requiring replacement of the entire dial and spring mechanism, or a faulty control board. WD40 lubricant on the spring may help, but a new dial and spring might be needed if the spring is corroded or broken. Replacing the control board is another potential solution.
