shep and kaidan have the stupidest relationship arc ever. i can't even pretend i made it up because the way it plays out in canon is perfect.
kaidan, operating under the assumption that he is more-or-less a straight man, has been assigned to the Normandy for a while now. this commander is straightforward, to-the-point, and has little to no inflection to his speech or body language. his mood is hard to read at a glance, but he never hesitates to speak his mind.
everyone who is anyone knows about his impressive military record - not to mention the mission details from that infamous siege on Torfan.
i think they know each other for about a month from the events of ME1 to the ME2 opening, then are SEPARATED for OVER THREE YEARS, kaidan is in and out of his life during that shit with cerberus, THEN they finally kiss. in the MIDDLE OF THE FINAL GAME!?
this is the canon timeline because it makes me giggle how long it took to get in kaidans pants. THE SLOW BURN TO END ALL SLOW BURNS... though currently i am re-playing to see the restored kaidan romance for ME1. and to get my missing achievementz.
