this can only be coming from my second ‘unpopular opinion’, and i’m gonna try my best to word this as well as i can - you don’t have to agree with me ( and maybe people won’t ), but i have strong feelings about it and hope even if you don’t, you’ll still respect my opinion ! 

mostly, my issue is what i’ve already outlined : if you’re going to age an older ( 40+ / 50+ / 60+ / whatever ) face claim down, then why are you playing them in the first place? there are, by now, HUNDREDS of face claims in the roleplay community to choose from, at all sorts of ages - if you wanted to play a twenty one year old, you have a plethora of options for that character who would WORK within an age rule ( i’m a fan of -5 / +5, but i know some people use different ones ) without taking madchen amick and using her twin peaks resources. there’s no REASON for you to use her for a younger character, when you have so many other options you could - and i don’t think that you’re making a statement by choosing her over them.

mostly, it feels counterproductive. older characters aren’t actually played very commonly in groups. that’s fine, because a lot of people just don’t feel comfortable and that’s understandable - but they aren’t. by taking a face claim who is, say, fifty, and by playing them as a twenty year old... you aren’t actually doing anything for your group. you aren’t making a change to the balance of younger vs older characters. you’re not even adhering to any of the now popular age rules. 

to me, it feels like it’s saying something ( and i’m not saying this is INTENTIONAL, but it’s how it looks ) to play an older face claim as such a younger character : you only want to use that face when they are at their youngest and thus, their most desireable. they’re only good for you when they’re younger than their current age. you only want to use them when they aren’t older. this is the message it sends, and my next point will probably explain why it sends that, to me -

what age do you have to reach, then, to be considered fine to age down again ? the rpc has gotten REALLY good in more recent years in playing face claims at an age appropriate to their real life one. if you played a 35 year old as a nineteen year old, now, you’d probably face a lot of backlash. so why is it perceived as totally fine to play a face claim who’s 40 / 50 / 60+, and age them down to being almost a child again ? why is it that once they’re past a certain point, the rpc feels like it’s okay ? it’s WHY it makes it impossible not to think my previous point - when you have a whole HOST of other options but you choose one who you have to age down by halve, maybe even triple their current age, you are not sending as good a message as you want to be sending. you just aren’t !
