#2583 - Salmo trutta - Brown Trout
The binomial Salmo trutta (trutta is literally Latin for Trout) was originally applied to the brown trout that move to saltwater when they reach adulthood, and return to gravelbeds far upstream to spawn - but it turns out some populations never leave the river, and others only migrate within freshwater, and these had been given their own binomials. A highly adaptable fish, with such variety that there are dozens of synonyms for Salmo trutta, and three still recognised subspecies.
Unfortunately that adaptability is why they're a very invasive species in many parts of the world, where they were introduced as a game fish. The number of cultured trout grown in captivity and released to restock rivers means there are now very few areas left with completely wild genetics anyway.
