March 21st : World Down Syndrome Day
Today is World Down Syndrome Day and I find it really sad that there that much buzz about it on Tumblr.
We talk about mental health awarness, autism awareness, adhd awareness, chronic illness awareness, etc. but I've really seen very little content on Down Syndrome. Every type of disability/difference should have the chance to be seen, to be heard. Every disability/difference deserves to be recognized for what it is and have the change to discredit all the stigma and misinformation that is passed around.
I recently starting working with a 2 year old with Down Syndrome and she is just wonderful. She can be a handful at times yes but so are all kids at some point. I've gotten to the privilege of having my preconceptions put to the test and to have them completely obliterated. Did I mention that she is afro-american? Because Down Syndrome isn't just present in white people but in people of colour as well.
I wouldn't be doing my part if I didn't mention World Down Syndrome Day and it would be wonderful if you could all help me spread the awareness. You can also wear mismatched socks today which is the sign used to show solidarity and awareness and to start conversations (unless you always have mismatched socks but then hey today you are doing it for a great cause!)
