âFucking motorcycles!â Â Dylan yelled smacking the steering wheel with his palm. Â âThis happens every time! Â You think you see a space, lots of room and then thereâs a God Damned bike taking up a third of a space that might be useful to you!â
âMaybe you shouldnât be driving around this tank of a four wheeler,â Owen scanned the parking garage. Â âWe live in New York, not backwoods Yukon.â
âJust shut up and help me look for a space, dumb ass,â Dylan grumbled. Â The massive truckâs engine rumbled, growling like a disturbed tiger prowling the parking spaces for itâs next meal. Â
âSmart car...smart car...smart car...â Dylan grumbled, looking at the spaces that could be filled by his truck. Â âNo respect for classic American muscle anymore...â
âIâm gonna do it...â Owen said, not looking from the spaces.
âWhat?â
âIâm gonna move back in with Val,â Owen mumbled. Â
âSorry,â Dylan said, scanning the spaces. Â âWhat was that?â
âIâm gonna move back in with Val. Â I just gotta swallow my pride and do it.â
âSeriously, Owen?â Dylan said. Â âThat girl was a psychopath! Â And youâre seriously considering moving in with her? Â Again? Â After everything?â
âFirstly, she wasnât a psychopath,â Owen said. Â âShe had some stuff going on, but itâs over. Â Secondly, I donât have a choice but to move back in with her. Â I canât afford rent in my place and it makes more sense to move in with Val.â
âYouâre kidding me!â Â Dylan cursed, stopping the truck. Â âYouâre moving back in with that controlling bitch?â
âShe wasnât a bitch, OK?â Â Owen said. Â âYeah, we fought and yeah, she was controlling...sometimes. Â But sheâs not like that anymore.â
âHow do you know?â
âWe talked...â
âOwen, you canât move back in with a girl who was stealing from you after a phone interview.â
âLetâs try another level,â Owen turned away from the spaces. Â âIf we make this loop another time, Iâm gonna get dizzy and puke.â
âNot in my car, youâre not!â Â Dylan ordered, turning the car toward the next level of the parking garage. Â Once they arrived, Dylan started the circling process again. Â âSee? Â Still no room. Â And donât think I forgot about Val. Â Sheâll use you again, man.â
âShe hasnât yet...â
âWhat?â
âWeâve been seeing each other again,â Owen explained. Â âPrivately. Â It started as a few cups of coffee, which she paid for, then dinners, which we split. Â Weâve been seeing each other for a few months now.â
âMonths!â Â Dylan slammed on the brakes and looked at Owen. Â âYouâve been seeing this girl for fucking months? Â Youâre so full of shit!â
âRemember those night classes I started taking?â
âYeah for computerâoh...â
âYeah, I didnât tell you cause I knew youâd freak out.â
âNo shit man, thatâs not how you treat your brother!â Â Dylan glared and let off the brake, moving the car forward. Â He looked out the window, scanning the backs of cars and getting more frustrated with each vehicle he saw filling a space. Â
âDylan, listen, I didnât want you to find out because I was worried youâd shake me off Val again.â
âCause sheâs fuckinâ evil!â
âBut,â Owen repeated a little louder, âsheâs been getting clean again. Â Sheâs sober now...â
âFuck that,â Dylan shook his head. Â âShe lied once she lied again. Â I mean, whatâs she got to offer this time?â
âSpace...â
âFuck that, I can offer you space. Â Or just go live with mom andââ
âNo, there was a space.â
âWhat?â Â Dylan looked back. Â âWhere?â
âBetween that yellow car and the grey sedan.â
âI see it now!â Â Dylan grinned a little, victorious. Â âNot gonna get me this time!â
Dylan pulled into the space quickly and started backing into the slot. Â The front of the truck still stood out a good foot or so out from the space, but Dylan was confident that no one would smash the front of his truck. Â
âLook,â Owen said. Â âI just wanted to give you time, you know? Â We werenât gonna hide it forever, but I thought it was only fair to let you know that Iâm gonna do it.â
âNo youâre not.â
âYeah, I am! Â And nothing you can say will change that.â
âWhy, Owen? Â Cause of love?â
âItâs nothing so stupid, donât think Iâm an idiot OK? Â She just...we just...itâs complicated.â
âUh-huh...â Dylan shook his head. Â âAnd whoâs gonna be there to pick up the pieces of your shattered life once you realize Val is still the same?â
âIâm not a kid anymore...â
âFuck that, youâre 23.â
âAnd your 28, whatâs your point?â
âMy point isââ Dylan started to yell, but let out a slow breath instead. Â âForget it. Â Iâm not gonna yell. Â I know how much you hate yelling.â
âYouâre OK then?â
âNo, Iâm not OK,â Dylan said. Â âI donât want to see you with that girl again. Â I made that very clear last time. Â But nothing I say will change your mind and Iâd rather be a part of your life when youâre doing something stupid than not be there to help when it falls apart, OK stupid?â
âYeah,â Owen nodded. Â âReady? Â We can still get to the store before it gets too late.â
âIâll be there in a second,â Dylan swallowed, unlocking the doors. Â âI need a second to clear my head first before I take a swing at you.â
Owen was about to say more, but stopped. Â He reached for the door handle and pulled. Â âDylan?â
âWhat?â
âI canât open the door.â
Dylan sighed and flipped the lock switch again. Â Owen opened the door a little, but the car out his side was keeping his door shut.
âFuck me...â Dylan cursed, smacking his steering wheel with an open palm. Â He tried to open his door, but found he was also stuck. Â For a moment, both boys sat in silence. Â
âWanna try the next level?â Â Owen asked. Â
âYeah,â Dylan sighed, defeated. Â âOK...â
