Trifacial Trinity paintings !
Those Paintings showing the Christ with three faces on one head were created in medieval Europe to represent the idea of one God in three persons: the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
By merging the faces, artists tried to show a shared divine essence.
But many found these images disturbing and theologically confusing. After the Council of Trent pushed for clearer religious imagery, opposition grew. In 1628, Pope Urban VIII officially banned such depictions, ordering their removal.
Some survived, but most disappeared from history...
