In this talk, Toshiya says he is not really picky with food. ‘My sense of taste is not really sensitive but I will react with  hot and spicy things’. It seems so. “When we are on tour in some areas, I'm looking forward to eat the famous dishes of these places. There is not a type of food that I particulary want to try but even if saying this might be surprising, I like sweet stuff. Traditional japanese sweets or western ones. I buy a lot of sweets at convenience stores.  After eating my meal I drop  by a convenience store and I think “Aaaa” while I  strech out my hands to pick them (laughs) Its very difficult to say which is my favourite sweet thing. It changes depending of the mood of the day....ah!  It may be moon cake (laughs). When I find it at shops I really feel like streching out my hands to take it. Drinks that match the taste of it are hot tea, soy milk or milk. The compatibility of these 3 drinks with the mooncake is the best. As I like sake, I can drink it too while I'm eating sweet stuff. Even with mooncake, sake goes well!!  There is nothing I can't eat at all, but I'm not good with spicy things. I can't either with red chili peppers and black pepper. For some strange reason, only wasabi is ok for me. Since I was a child, I didn't eat a lot of stimulating foods so I guess that's why I'm not accustomed to spicy things. The curry that was made at my home wasn't spicy either.  Once I went to a friend's house and we had curry.  I remember I ate it and it was too spicy. I thought “Is really curry so spicy?”

Good and bad smells. The impact of bad smells from the past on Toshiya. About it, he  said  he thinks he is not sensitive. It seems  his nose isn't very effective.

“Smells  I like.... if you are japanese I think you may understand...the smell of curry on saturdays right? (laughs) Like, when I was coming back walking from school and the smell of  people preparing dinner came from houses around the way. I really liked that. I like the smell of rain too. I can't compare well, but the indescriable damp smell is good right? The peculiar feeling of the soil and the asphalt. It calms me down. Another smell that makes me feel like that is the smell of historic buildings. When I'm on tour in rural areas, sometimes I go to the castle of those places. The smell is close to the one when I went to my grandmother's house in the countryside. It feels like humidity. When there is a something  I smelled in my childhood I always remember where I smelled it and I connect it to my memories.

I don't go to these places very often but the smell of museums and libraries can be healing. Their unique smell and calm. Recently I'm going to cafes and staying inside. Being able to relax in these places is really good. It's my special  time. A smell that I hate.....the first that comes to my mind is fermented tofu. It seems typical of the Asia region, but the fermented tofu is a food like japanese natto or kusaya is for people from overseas. Oh, the smell is in any case  very strong. Once we were on a tour.... it was surely in Shanghai or Hong kong. We were wandering around the city when we noticed a terrible smell. Someone said “Somewhere someone is dead for sure!”. The smell was really awful (laughs) Well, basically I don't know that, how a dead person smells. But the smell was really strong and acrid. I got worried and asked a local person “what's that smell?”, they told me “it's food”. “You must be kidding!” I thought. Even with such an awful smell, the food seemed to be very addictive.The smell was no good at all but it is delicious once it is in your mouth. Even if I was told that, I absolutely couldn't do it. I can't eat it. I mean, I can't wait until it is inside my mouth (laughs) 

Sounds  he cant miss as an artist. Sounds that shake off a lot of feelings and brings back again a lot of important memories of his childhood.

“A pleasant sound would be the sounds of a Sentō (Japanese public bath house). When you use a bathtub you can hear them; the echoes of your voice when you talk and sounds of daily life...it is really pleasant. Recently Sentō have become like fashionable health spas, with a very mechanical image. It became like something too lovely and perfect. Successively, you get into the bathtube, then you have lunch and then you go to sleep. It looks like an assembly-line system. As expected, the feeling of the Sento is very different, it should be more like a heartwarming place, close to the feeling of  hot springs. But, this doesn't mean that I don't like health spas. When we are playing in a rural area, I go there with the staff. There (in the spa) I get a body scrub treatment. But surprisingly, it is mostly done by young women, so at those times I get a bit nervous (wry smile).

A sound that I hate is the sound of the  road constructions at midnight. When I'm about to fall asleep and I can hear those noises, I get anxious  and I get up. Then, my sleepiness goes away and even if I was about to sleep  I can´t sleep at all. A sound that I want to stop, it's the high-frequency sound when you scratch a blackboard, I can't stand it at all. When people around me is like “kyaaaaa” I really hate this but I'm usually ok with it.

I was born in a rural area of Nagano, with mountains nearby so I prefer nature sounds than busy cities sounds. In summer the frogs would settle down and be really noisy (laughs) There were some rice fields nearby where you could listen  the “kerokero”(frog sounds) all around . Speaking of this, in the past in the rice fields there were always shield shrimps. Recently I haven’t seen any .Now I suddenly just remembered this but I  don't see  these rice fields daily anymore. It's about time I do it looking through the window of the shinkansen when I'm back to this area or when I go back home.

Also, nowdays I don't see fireflies at all. When I was a child, I often stopped at the insect screen of my house's windows and they were shining. I changed the subject of the talk a bit but, when I remember these sounds, the memories of the past revive just like this. It's like what I felt in my childhood have remained in my memories this way.
